Worthless Book

I live in New Mexico and this book lists only 4 sites to mine / rock hound. I know of at least 35 sites in the state none of witch the book lists not to mention the books 4 sites are all pay sites where you must pay a fee to dig. The author did little to no research on the available sites in this state. In the back of this book is a form called readers contribution where the author wants you the reader to send them the locations of mines you know of so they don't have to do any research and may profit off your work or knowledge. Do not waste your time on this book if you are serious about rock mineral and gem hunting.

Oh well, I suppose that this guide tells the truth and has no glaring inadequacies, but maybe the whole Southwest is to big to cover in a book to introduce the layman to gem and mineral collecting. Kinda light...

The Stories I've Heard...

Yeah, I wish I'd been there... but I was too young. But the stories I've heard... and these are just as good... maybe better. There isn't a single story that's not believeable... and you can put yourself as the key player of anyone of them and know that you'd have had a wonderful time. The all stories center around the doorman, "Cam", and if it was this much fun just to get in the doorway it would have to be heaven inside. The well-crafted tales all hang together well and can be enjoyed either as hard-core gay porn or quality erotica. Whichever your taste you'll enjoy your visit to Mineshaft Nights. The only problem with the book is that is isn't longer, or doesn't have a sequel.

Unfortunately, I am too young to have experienced the golden days of gay sexual liberation in the 1970s, but "Mineshaft Nights" creates a dreamlike sense of what it was like to explore the very extremes of gay sexuality at NYC's Mineshaft.

sad the reprint does not have the original artwork

Nothing wrong with the book; the stories are very much true to what I experienced in and around the Mineshaft. But I took it off the shelves originally not only because I was part of that amazing era of newly discovered sexual freedom around the westside piers, meatpacking district, village bars, times square, studio 54, but because I was very much drawn by the amazing artwork of Tom Jones on the bright red front cover. Even more surprised I was to find lots of his black and white drawings illustrating the stories inside. These superb masterpieces of one of the great queer art pioneers do not seem to be included in this reprint.
Still a hot read which makes you feel it's high time we stop being tight assed and get queer culture back as the shining quidelight it was in the seventies.
Just hope the publisher can obtain the rights to use the original art in following reprints again

The Embodied Image offers both stellar examples of Chinese calligraphy and tools with which to view it. And it successfully bridges the gap between the non-Chinese reader's concern over incomprehension, the modernist's appreciation of calligraphy as linear abstraction, and the traditional connoisseur's approach.

Edited by art historians Robert Harrist and Wen C. Fong and with contributions from 11 other scholars, the volume documents the calligraphy collection of Princeton University's Art Museum, which Fong calls "the only collection outside China and Japan that properly represents the sixteen-hundred-year history of this highly prized ... art form." Filled with marvels ranging from one of the earliest known fragments of the classic text Tao Te Ching to letters and scrolls by artists who are the Rembrandts and Picassos of the medium, The Embodied Image presents Chinese calligraphy in terms of brushwork, as text, as the expression of the writer's personal cultivation, and as the underpinning of later (if not all) Chinese painting.

There's plenty of ink play for the eye to dance over: fluid, angular, stiff, or scratchy. The accompanying texts--two introductory essays on calligraphic history and theory and eight specialized ones, with various levels of detail--allow readers to choose their own depth. But the visual "text" alone is illuminating and provides pleasure. The 55 featured works, dating from 270 to the 1870s, are divided into seven groups, with short historical introductions preceding the works (reproduced in color and nuanced duotone). Four hundred more illustrations, including character comparisons, are enormously helpful, as is the labeling of the parts of a 12-foot scroll assembled over several centuries around a traced copy of a two-line fragment of a letter by the most influential calligrapher of all, Wang Hsi-chih.

The John B. Elliott Collection at Princeton University's Art Museum is the only collection outside of China and Japan that properly represents the 1600-year history of Chinese calligraphy. About the Author
Harrist is associate professor of art and archarology at Columbia University in New York City.

Wen C. Fong is professor emeritus of Chinese art history at Princeton University, where he taught from 1954 to 1999, established the country's first PhD program in Chinese and Japanese art and archaeology, and served for many years as faculty curator of Asian art at the Princeton University Art Museum. He also served as consultative chairman of the Department of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for three decades before retiring in 2000. His many books include "Images of the Mind", "Beyond Representation", and "Possessing the Past".

Most major styles are presented in this wonderfully printed book. The articles are informatory and scholarly. This fine collection of calligraphy is intoxicatingly beautiful.

A Different Way of Thinking About the Written Word

What fascinates me so much about this book, what keeps drawing me to it, is this: the calligraphers of ancient China wrote as they painted, and painted as they wrote. In other words, each character is an "embodied image" which expresses the moods and passions of its creator.
When we Westerners read, we read for content, for meaning only. We do not read and at the same time notice how the characters look. Since Gutenberg and the advent of movable type, and especially now, with digital type, each of our characters must always look the same. When they don't, it is considered an imperfection. In Chinese calligraphy, however, considerable attention is given to how the characters look. It is through their appearance that we can discern the whether the creator was hurried, what angle he wrote at, and what mood he might have been in.
The visual effect of a poem written by a great Chinese calligrapher a thousand years ago, vs. reading the same poem in a standardized font, is quite stark. We have a lot to learn from the Chinese, especially given their likely ascension of global power in the coming years. This book provides an indispensable, detailed, well illustrated reference for an important aspect of how Chinese culture differs so dramatically from our own.

Private collection catalogue

At 1st of May,2003, in Osaka municipal Museum, Japan, I appreciated the travelling exhibition including this John B. Elliott Collection.
This traced copy scroll of a two-line fragment of a letter by Wang Hsi-chih(ACE303-361) is fine. Atouched Dong Quichang(1555-1636) colophones and large character maximes calligraphy are impressive. Sung dynasty Emperor Hui-Tsong(r. 1101-1125) court mounting and seals seem genuine. The Wang calligraphy itself has enough quality among many his old replicas. The ink colour feels rather later period than 8th century.
Another impressive work is Zhu Yunming(ACE1460-1526)'s small square script
album.
However, this is a private and personal collection catalogue. Reading this, one imagines and looks for passed Mr. Elliott's personality and taste.
It is too heavy burden for this collection to act as a textbook of great chinese calligraphy history.
Indeed there is few museum whose collection is completely genuine, I recommend chinese-calligraphy lovers in USA to appreciate, study and learn masterpieces in National Palace Museum, Taipei, First.
Japanese collections also have masterpieces.

An unusual pair of collaborators have produced this manual for curing illness through prayer and meditation. Goldhamer is a Reform rabbi in Skokie, Ill., where his congregation consists largely of deaf people. Stengel, a Catholic, is a social worker in private practice who teaches at Northwestern University. In 1982, Goldhamer was told that he had a rare disease that required amputation of his leg. Refusing to accept this prescription, he sought out an Orthodox rabbi who taught the value of healing prayer. After seven months of regular sessions during which he learned to pray with intensity and total focus, he was cured. Several years later, Stengel, suffering from depression and anxiety, was successfully treated by Goldhamer, who asserted that the therapeutic power of prayer and meditation cuts across all religious boundaries. They decided to make this universal approach available to everyone. The material is presented in nine chapters, each following the same three-part format. Goldhamer leads with a "Universal Principle." Stengel then explains this as a "Liberating Concept." Finally, the rabbi offers a "How To" section in which he sets forth the actual techniques of prayer and meditation. These involve candles, special breathing, visualizations and repetitions, sometimes based on mystical Kabbalah concepts. The text includes stories from the Bible and Talmud, as well as examples of cases in which spiritual healing achieved cures. Skeptics may raise eyebrows at some of the book's more fantastic claims about miraculous healings, but the authors' ecumenical approach and practical how-to instructions should appeal to a broad readership. Praying for healing

Using language very easy to understand, regardless of religious background, this book makes the case for the power of asking for Divine intervention to bring about healing and good health. It discusses why praying for someone else is effective and suggests a number of techniques for praying. The book is well written and very useful for those of us looking for a way to help others.

This Is INDEED for Everyone

I'm not sure if it is because I am a Presbyterian, or in spite of it (it could have been Emerson and Thoreau), that I believe there is a little piece of God in each of us. My misconception was that we were to wait for the God in us to come out. Rabbi Goldhamer has shown me the way to the light and I will eagerly seek Him/Her out within myself. My review is that the book in enlightening and inspirational and my list of people to give it to keeps growing the more I reflect upon its content. Thanks for sharing what you know and practice with the rest of us.

Probably my favorite book

I received this book as a gift back in March of 2001 when I was very, very sick. I can't even begin to explain how much it helped me at that time and over the years as well. I in turn have given the book(not my copy) to many others to help them with their issues. At one point, I would have 2-3 copies on hand to give out when I found someone hurting, with questions and with pain(physical, mental, emotional) in their lives.

I trusted in the exercises before I saw proof as they ask and by trusting in the book, I can honestly say it has taken me on a path that may never have been possible. It is about achieving physical, spiritual, emotional and mental peace.

I was sick and by all rights I should have died. This book has given me the strength and the tools to make a recovery that is no less short of miraculous. I am not one to throw those words around and in truth this is the first time. This book has helped me to recover, look at life in an even better light, given me the tools to get answers I may never have known. I know it has helped the others that I have passed it on to also.

If I could only have one book, this would be it.

I was raised Catholic. I believe in the healing powers within us and talking to God in us, whichever God you choose to honor. The book says that about 80% of the world's religions are based on the same information, it is only the last 20% that we really differ. These are ancient healing techniques and prayers taught in a modern way.

If you are thinking of getting this book, I would say you can't lose with having it in your library and reading it often. I have read it countless times and I do the exercises every night to this day. It works for me and it has worked for others I know too.

Trust it and keep with it. You will get the answers. Your mind will work on your solutions as you sleep. If it tells you to do something out of the box, do it. I did and the benefits I have gotten or given to others are well worth the little discomfort of going against conventional behavior, wisdom, comfort zone, whatever you want to call it.

I was surviving day to day back in 2001 with no outlook past 2 years. Now I am writing a review on this book in 2012 and coming up on my 11th anniversary of surviving. I had some great doctors but I attribute my part of the success to this book and how it reinforced some things I was already doing and gave me new ideas and techniques to do even better.

About the Author
John Bailey Lloyd was an author, librarian, newspaper columnist, speaker, and historian on Long Beach Island at the New Jersey Shore. Frequently referred to as ''Long Beach Island's historian'', although no such official position existed, he was employed as a reference librarian in the Ocean County Library System. But his passion was for local history and, an engaging speaker, he gave weekly talks on shore history at standing-room-only programs in his home town of Beach Haven for two decades.

He wrote a widely-read column and historical features for the island's newspapers, and authored three best-selling books, including: Six Miles At Sea and Two Centuries of History. The books focused on Long Beach Island, but captured much of the history of the entire Shore. He also wrote biographical introductions to other books, including The Tides of Barnegat, by F. Hopkinson Smith, and a short story included in the literary anthology Shore Stories. He provided material and the basis for three historical videos, including programs about the Barnegat Lighthouse and the ''Lost Resort of Sea Haven: Tucker's Island.''

Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1932, he had been on Long Beach Island since he was ten years old -- in time to see old landmarks like the Beach Haven boardwalk, the Engleside Hotel and the vast emptiness of the Island as it once was. With time out for service in the Coast Guard, graduate school and some travel, he spent nearly every summer on the Island, and in 1977 his family became permanent residents and moved into their Beach Haven summer home -- an 1879 three-story Victorian. He died in 2003 at age 71.

This book is a great way to pass the time and learn about the history of the Jersey Shore. John Bailey Lloyd loaded his book with details and great pictures of the early days of Long Beach Island. It's an easy read and truly a relaxing book.

About the Author
David Dunn has a long history in the worlds of soundscapes, contemporary composition, and leading edge thinking. He first became known in the early 1970's for his place-based compositions, written to be performed in specific outdoor (often wilderness) locations, and designed to be frameworks for interaction between musicians and the environment. From there, he moved on to the International Synergy Institute, where he was editor of the IS Journal for several years, forging connections between scientists and artists from a wide range of media. Since moving to Santa Fe, David has continued to record the wild, design museum sound installations, teach, and write (most recently, a biography of Harry Partch). While he has a huge list of previous writings and sound installations, this is his first work for a popular audience.

Why Do Authors Write?

David Dunn has a fairly distinguished reputation as a field recordist, a phonographer, a collector and manipulator of sounds. His ear is attuned to sounds normal people can't hear, or overlook in their haste. He tends to be a miniaturist.

A book on his recording experiences and techniques is not out of the realm of interest, therefore. This book, illustrated with a 40-track CD, explains a fair bit about where and how each recording was made.

But it fails to answer, or even address, the questions of the book's title. Why DO whales sing? Why DO children sing? For the same reasons, presumably, that authors write books. Dunn has a predictable point to make -- diminishing habitat, human noise pollution, complexity of nature, blah-blah-blah -- but mostly this too-slim volume is an excuse to present some cool recordings (alas, also way too short!) and talk about them. Briefly.

The entire package is very reminiscent of Bernie Krause's "Wild Soundscapes" book + CD, although it predates it by 3 years!
