Very nice book on basic optics. A colleague recommended it as a primer, stating telescope optics were easier to understand than camera, microscope, or other domains. So far, this has proven to be the case.

Manual is more comprehensive than accessible

There was a time once when amateur astronomers had exposure to only a few different kinds of telescopes--mostly simple achromatic refractors, which comprise just two lenses cemented together (plus an eyepiece), and Newtonian reflectors, which include a mirror plus the eyepiece. Many, possibly most, of these amateurs also made their own optics, and as a result, they knew most of what there was to know about these designs.
Nowadays, it's quite different. Not only are there vastly more types of telescopes, but most amateurs now buy telescopes; telescope building is a diminishing part of amateur astronomy, and people make their own telescopes out of desire, not necessity. It's harder than ever now for amateurs to really know about optical designs in breadth and depth.
Into this breach step Rutten and van Venrooij, two Dutch astronomers who wanted to know more about optics but found that resources were generally unavailable to amateurs. So, they wrote their own. Telescope Optics is a compendium of optical information, geared to the intermediate to advanced amateur. Like Gaul, it can be divided into three parts: Chapters 1 through 4 discuss optical principles; Chapters 5 through 16 apply those principles to various telescope and accessory designs; and Chapters 17 through 22 cover evaluation and design.
The manner of the text is generally scholarly but informal. Although optical principles are explained from the fundamentals, the authors still assume a certain level of comfort with high school mathematics and analytical exposition. In particular, it helps if the reader can easily digest information in two-dimensional graphs. This can make the book somewhat imposing for those readers who really just want to know, at a high level, what makes their own telescope tick.
For those readers capable of making their way through the analysis, however, the authors clearly and comprehensively explain the workings of several telescope and camera designs, and discuss in brief the quirks of at least half a dozen more. The compromises of each design are detailed to the level of so-called "third-order aberrations"; these include coma, astigmatism, field curvature, spherical aberration, and distortion.
The authors also make available their own design software. Being 15 years down the line, the software is somewhat out of date, and it does not come free with the book; it must be purchased separately. The book does explain how to use the software, though.
Overall, the book should find its way onto the shelf of anyone who wants to learn, seriously, about their optics. For those who simply want a taste of how optics work, or who need a gentle introduction to the field, it probably ought to wait until later.

Excellent manual for beginners and advanced amateurs

Telescope Optics is a comprehensive, educational and practical manual for beginners and advanced amateur opticians and astronomers. It is probably one of the best overall sources of information on basic optics, optical instruments and their prformance. The book comes with a DOS-based computer program that allows users to design their own systems and evaluate theoretical or existing optical configurations. Telescope Optics fills the gap between simple amateur telescope and optics manuals and professional literature. The book is due for a second edition, as well as an upgraded optical design and analysis program suitable for Windows-driven computer environment. Although Telescope Optics came with some errata sheets, the book has notable omissions and errors, summarized below. - Page 5, line 19. No mention is made of either F. B. Wright (1935) or Y. Väisälä (1936), whose modifications to the original Schmidt camera design resulted in more compact, flat-field instruments suitable for visual as well as photographic work. - Page 88, line 5. Credit is given to K. Slevogt (October, 1942) for developing a modification to the famous Baker camera. His work was preceeded, however, by C. R. Burch (April, 1942) in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (Vol. 102, No. 3, "Design of Approximately Flat-fielded System, with Two Spherical Mirrors and One Plate"). - Page 127, line3. The book incorrectly relates R. J. Lurie's work with that of J. L. Houghton. Houghton (U.S. Patent No 2,350,112, May 30, 1944) proposed a two-element all-spherical corrector used in conjunction with a spherical mirror for a Newtonian-like configuration. The system is aplanatic (free of coma and spherical aberration). Lurie (Journal of the Optical Society of America, March 1975, p. 261) proposes two-element all-spherical correctors in conjunction with aspheric (conic-section) mirrors resulting in a fully systems that are fully anastigmatic - free of coma, spherical aberration and astigmatism. The two systems are not interchangable and only bear superficial resemblence. The value of Lurie's configurations is in superior optical performance, which in all aspects except distortion rival that of a true Schmidt camera, and in the applicability of converting smaller Newtonian configurations into first-class astrographs. - Page 145, Section 14.4, the book omits to mention that Ross-type correctors can be used in conjunction with hyperboloidal primary mirrors, resulting in anastigmatic flat-field astrographs (offered by Takahashi of Japan). Since full-aperture correctors are not practical for large Newtonian-like configurations, vast number of amateurs with telescopes larger than 10-inches in diameter could convert their instruments to high quality astrocameras. Suitable correctors, other than the Ross, have also been investigated and implemented on existing observatory Newtonian systems. Availability of their design and analysis would be of paramount importance to serious amateur observers and astrophotographers. Mladen K. Vranjican

Some eighty years after the first publication, this work remains the best single source on traditional porcupine quill work and Orchard remains the acknowledged expert in the field.

The book is fully illustrated and features a color center section of examples of the art form. The plates and diagrams show every facet of quillwork from plaiting through wrapping. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow for the craftsperson and the pictures and text make this a treasure for anyone interested in the craftwork of Native Americans.

As was done in the 1971 reprint of the first edition, no attempt has been made to revise the original text, figures or plates. However, four of the plates were destroyed and have been replaced by photographs of quilled articles taken from the editor's personal collection. The map was created for the reprint by Mr. Douglas Waugh and has not been changed.

This book is an enduring classic and the Eagle's View edition is currently in its sixth printing.

A contemporary of Paul and Jesus, Philo Judaeus, of Alexandria, Egypt, is unquestionably among the most important writers for historians and students of Hellenistic Judaism and early Christianity. Although Philo does not explicitly mention Jesus, or Paul, or any of the followers of Jesus, Philo lived in their world. It is from Philo, for example, that we learn about how, like the Gospel of John, Jews (and Greeks) in the Greco-Roman world spoke of the creative force of God as God's "Logos." Philo, too, employs interpretive strategies that parallel those of the author of Hebrews. Most scholars would agree that Philo and the author of Hebrews are drawing from the same, or at least similar, traditions of Hellenistic Judaism. With these kind of connections to the world of Judaism and early Christianity, Philo cannot be ignored.

The cover illustration depicts a piece of "gold glass" found near Rome. The menorah, or seven-branched lamp stand, was a popular symbol of Judaism and can be found on such famous architectural monuments as the Arch of Titus. The scene on this "gold glass" also shows other items of Jewish ritual significance, including the Ark of the Covenant flanked by two Lions, a "shofar" or trumpet, a palm branch, and an oil jar. Many of these items held strong messianic significance and figured prominently in the life of Israel, such as in the Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths). The photo appears courtesy of the Vatican Library and is used with permission.

About the Author

C. D. Yonge (1812-1892), a noted classicist and author of more than thirty-five works, studied classics at St. Mary Hall, Oxford. A professor of modern history and English literature at Queen's College, Belfast, from 1866 until the time of his death, Yonge also compiled a Greek-English lexicon. The present translation of the works of Philo first appeared in 1854-1855 in 4 volumes in Bohn's Ecclesiastical Library.

Good translation of important works

The works of Philo are important to scholars of history and philosophy for a number of reasons, and are found in an accessible translation here.

Jewish and Kabbalistic scholars will find early Neoplatonized commentary on the Jewish scriptures, while classicists will find useful comparative points regarding Roman practices, and philosophers will find useful developments of Plato's thoughts. This book really does have a great deal to offer many students of different disciplines. Christian scholars too will find a great deal of roots of early Church theology in this work as well.

I would highly recommend the study of Philo to most people, and this is a good translation of his works.

Finally a book that celebrates our lives!

A beautiful book filled with honest heart warming stories. It was so refreshing to read about people that not only accept their gay family members but celebrate and cherish them. Highly recommended for all people that have a gay or lesbian loved one.

The Perfect Gift for the Family of a LGBT Person.

The stories are unmistakably from the heart and the courage that these people display would be remarkable except for the love they have for their lgbt family member, which makes it all make sense. A mention of a relative who always wore dresses in a matter of fact way is refreshing. A mother riding on the back of a daughter's motorcycle in a 'dikes on bikes' contingent in a gay pride parade show the fun parents can have when they get over society's biases, they no longer claim as their own.
The proud father with the gay son license plate has to be a wonderful emotional lift to young person who is on the border of hating themselves from ingesting the homophobia in society. This is a wonderful gift to give for the holidays to family members who are accepting but haven't gone the next step to speaking out and educating society to make the world a safer place for their gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender loved ones.
The humor srinkled throughout the stories tickled my heart as the real stories of rejection teared my eyes as I learned so much about those who reached out in love and became better persons in the process. The mother who took her son to a gay bar so he could socialize while she could keep her eye on him as he learned to spread his wings was precious. Every gay man would love to be blessed with a mom like her.

Out of the Closet - Into Our Hearts presents the reader with prose balanced with poetry and drawings illuminating lives in multiple modes to reach and connect with every type of person who reads and is willing to listen. Brief narratives with depth of passion, love and being proud fill this book almost to the bursting point. The reader finds a wonderful slice of the real world -- as varied and unique as each person is whether gay, straight, lesbian or transgender.
Those that are the most personally touching include Mom, What's Gay? in which Deb Bridge exhibits the courage and love for her son that I wish my mom had been capable of expressing for me. Just Like Everyone Else, Laura Siegel's poem to her son, Stuart, brought tears to my eyes to see such joy by a mom for her son. Such absolute love and support, knowing and accepting all that her son is. The relationship of mother/son, friend and confidante at such a deep personal level is something I was never able to reach with my own mother. Melissa Pinol's Back to the Bear World shares the timeless love between Melissa and her brother Grant. In spite of overwhelming interference from their parents, including forced separation, the close bond between brother and sister persisted, developing into deep and compassionate caring. Melissa enabled her brother to reach the end of his life with dignity and peace. Duncan Zenobia Saffir's short poem about his brother, Uncomfortable, is packed with the simplicity of love. ...And All We Did Was Love is a collection of stories that are full of tears, laughter, support and love.
Out of the Closet - Into Our Hearts is a primer for all to read and reflect on the importance of love in each person's life. The stories offered are not only affirming to out gay, lesbian and transgender people, but also especially affirming for those struggling to come out and parents and family struggling to accept and understand.
As I sat in my living room engrossed in these stories, I asked myself `Why can't I stop reading this book?' The answer: Because it is compelling, honest, loving and sincere.
I came out to my parents in 1967 at the age of 19. If it weren't for the love and support of my mother, I would not be writing these lines. As the favorite and youngest of 3 sons, my mother and I developed a deep, loving relationship. She positively influenced my life in many ways, including my career choice, as I followed in her elegant footsteps and became a librarian. Back then, over thirty years ago, my gay friends and I yearned for a future that included acceptance, openness and civil rights. Back then, we would have said Out of the Closet - Into Our Hearts would be classified as fiction since it was inconceivable that anything like this could be written...and published. Lucky for us that today it is FACT.
What I want to know is...do either Ms Siegel or Ms Olson adopt?

The author:
Aaron Blumenfeld is a composer, author, teacher and concert pianist who has worked intensively in classical, jazz and Jewish music. He studied under John Mehegan, author of Jazz education books and teacher of jazz at the Juilliard School of Music. Aaron received his M.A. in music composition from Rutgers University, New Brunswick for his research into early jazz piano. He taught a popular course, FREE IMPROVISATION AT THE PIANO (renamed BLUES, JAZZ & MODERN PIANO IMPROVISATION) at the University of California, Berkeley Extension School for twenty years and at the Berkeley Jazz School for five years. He has published several books:

- "The Art of Blues and Barrelhouse Piano Improvisation (1988)", which was renamed "The Blues, Boogie and Barrelhouse Piano Workbook"

- Blues & Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles (1995)

- A Method for Avant Garde Piano Improvisation: A new Perspective on Harmony (1983).

The book:
This 232 page-book is a great book to master before you get the author's other book: "How to Play Blues and Boogie Piano Styles", which I also reviewed. Since the author's research for his masters degree was about this subject, one can expect some serious material. All the techniques discussed are backed up by examples. Major sections are basic rhythms, harmonies, bass patterns, grace notes, clusters, repeated patterns, tremolos, "blue" notes, barrelhouse and ragtime sounds, textures, syncopations and more. He further tells you which recordings have the specific examples that he's trying to explain to you.

The verdict:
The serious student of the Boogie Woogie will spend many hours on this book, learning from the "master" and... grinning. ;-)

Comprehensive blues techniques for the purist - a real gem!

I just completed a class from Mr. Blumenfeld himself on blues piano techniques. I highly recommend his instruction and this book. The book is a comprehensive analysis of blues piano techniques, in highly readable and enlightening form, with a lot of interesting illustrative detail. There are numerous examples, exercises, and short compositions illustrating techniques for right and left hands, such as chord and blues scale bass lines, rocking chords, glissandos, repeated and grace notes, etc. There is an extensive song bibliography with examples of specific techniques from early to mid-century blues pianists. Any level of player can benefit from this book!

Note that this is strictly blues - the techniques covered are basic blues styles, not jazz.

Explains all you need to know to learn how to play and improvise blues and boogie woogie. I bought this after playing through and using another book by Blumenfeld. This is the perfect companion.
