About the Author
This is Jerry Thomas Boyd's first novel. It started as a short story in a writing class back in San Francisco in 1995. Jerry Boyd knows who he is. He knows as a writer he is merely a dilettante. This doesn't bother him. He only wanted to tell an entertaining tale from a metaphysical perspective. He lives in his home state of Indiana and is unlawfully married to a man and happier than he's ever been in his life. His own story could have happened in any other time or place but it didn't.

Engaging, metaphysical, adventurous and just plain fun!

Shift Happens - A Novel of Awakenings takes us on many journeys. The journey of a relationship, the journey of an individual finding himself in relation to the outer world, discovering his inner world, dancing with spirituality. And what a glorious journey it is - disco on a space ship, trusting old friends, finding new ones, discovering new things about oneself, touching into the Golden Age of Hollywood and the heart of metaphysical teachings - all told in an engaging style with humor and panache. I passed this book along to a friend and wanted to update this review with what she shared with me by email. "I am about half way through and loving the cast of characters. I am finding that the thrill ride of meeting ETs is only part of the fun of this book. Along with some truly Cosmic insights, I am gaining a fascinating glimpse into the world of gay men and their relationships. I gave a copy to a friend who has lent it to a young man who is 'just coming out' and whose family has rejected him. My friend is a psychiatric social worker. He said that it has been 'perfect' for this client. It has made it easier for him to talk more openly. Bob hasn't had a chance to read it but feels he is 'reading it through the client' so he is very grateful."

Like nothing I have read before--this surprised me in many ways and taught me a lot about topics I hadn't thought much about. I like to be surprised and my favorite books are the ones that I can say "How did he think of that?" when I'm done. I don't like predictability and this was not the least bit predictable. It was well written. The prose described everything so well that I felt I was there--even on the spaceship!

About the Author
David Rothel's lifelong fascination with show business began with frequent visits to his local movie theater, where he followed the adventures of his favorite screen heroes. He has since gone from youthful observer to performer, theater producer/director, teacher, and published authority on various aspects of popular entertainment (eleven books in twenty-three years). Mr. Rothel's most recent books have been The Gene Autry Book and The Roy Rogers Book, both reference-trivia-scrapbooks and extremely popular with Mr. Rothel's readers; the revised editions of Lash LaRue, The King of the Bullwhip and Allan "Rocky" Lane, Republic's Action Ace, co-written with Chuck Thornton; An Ambush of Ghosts:, A Personal Guide to Favorite Western Film Locations, to which film historian Leonard Maltin devoted two Entertainment Tonight segments; and Tim Holt, a biography of the popular RKO Western star. A BOONE TO ALL FANS.......

This is an excellant work on the life of a complex and interesting individual who clearly grabbed Life and lived it his own way. Wonderful interviews and photographs provide true insight into the character of a man who WAS quite a "character". There are innumerable anecdotes and facts covering the length of Boone`s life and career that will fascinate the reader. I was left with a sad,sort of wistful feeling after reading of Richard Boone`s life....and death. This was a man I would have liked to have met,and would have found a common-ground with in many ways...but at least through this work I had the opportunity to realise that. There are flaws in this book,actually in some remarkably simple areas which could easily have been corrected with a modicum of research,(example: The episode listing for Boone`s signature series "Have Gun--Will Travel" is surprisingly flawed,claiming there were "156 episodes"(page 194)when there were in fact, 225 episodes of "Have Gun--"....but, as flaws go,this is fairly minor. After all, the focus here is not the minutia,but the man himself.

During the golden age of television (1949-64) there were many outstanding programs--"I Love Lucy" with Lucille Ball, "The Honeymooners" with Jackie Gleason, "Love that Bob" with Bob Cummings, and "The Ed Sullivan Show", just to name a few. One of the best programs of the day, and seldom seen on TV since, was the western "Have Gun Will Travel" with Richard Boone who played the main character, Paladin.
The show started on September 14, 1957 on CBS and ran for six years. This half-hour show aired Saturday nights at 9:30 PM just before another popular western, "Gunsmoke". The character, Paladin had a great impact on me. To say the least, I loved his style and sense of right and wrong. Thus, Have Gun was my favorite western and Richard Boone my favorite cowboy. The series was filmed at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood and on location in the rough and tumble areas of Bend, Oregon.
What made the program, was not just the great writing, and wonderful productions, but rather the acting Of Richard Boone was unlike anything I had ever seen before.
In his new book by David Rothel, "Richard Boone; a man without Armor in a Savage land," Rothel, brings us closer to one the most talented and most complex men Ever to grace the TV screen. The book will guide you threw Boone's early years, and explains his desire In becoming an actor.
This book is not just a chronicle of Have Gun will Travel, but also a wonderful review on Boone's other Programs, Medic, The Richard Boone Theatre, and Heck Ramsey. And thou Rothel does and outstanding job dealing with the Boone's 4 TV programs, it is his writing regarding the years that produced that great western, Have Gun will Travel that makes this book come alive.
Boone was born June 18, 1917 in Los Angeles, and was actually a seventh generation nephew of frontiersman Daniel Boone. He garnered critical acclaim for his acting on stage and on screen, both large and small.
Rothel gives great detail on life in front and in back of the camera. Especially in Have Gun Rothel shows little glimpses of just who Paladin was. He lived a dual life as a wealthy man of the world residing in a posh San Francisco Hotel and as a black clothed gunfighter - for hire. We were also introduced to Paladin's business card, which would find it's way into every episode.
Paladin came from a well to do family back east. He served as a Union Cavalry officer during the Civil War, then at some point thereafter left for Frisco to assume his double life of civilized sophisticate and rough and tumble gunfighter. At the prestigious Hotel Carlton, he lived a life of leisure and luxury. He liked the Arts, fine food, cigars, and acquired knowledge on scores of subjects, from law, to poetry, and history. He dressed in the most expensive clothes of the day, spoke several languages, played the piano, composed his own symphony and played chess with all the tenacity of a military tactician.
But things were different once Paladin changed into his work attire. Dressed completely in black, with a silver chess-knight on his holster, Paladin simply had no peer. He stood alone at the top of the gun slinging world and he knew it. He used a black, single action Colt .44 with an extra long, rifled barrel; the gun was hand-crafted to his specifications, and had a one-ounce trigger pull. He also wisely carried a concealed derringer, which he'd often use for good effect some time after being told to "drop your gun."
He was physically strong, and great with his fists (Richard Boone did all of his stunts despite being in his mid 40's), but it was with his gun that Paladin truly excelled.
Paladin would hire out his services to those who were in need. On many occasions, Paladin would do charity work, donating or waving his fee for a good cause. Paladin was a great champion for Justice, highly principled and ethical, ALWAYS concerned with what's right. He was truly one of televisions greatest heroes.
"Have Gun will Travel" is a great legacy of a by gone era, the old west, and the Golden Age of Television. And Richard Boone played an extremely important role during that Golden Age. David Rothel's 277 page book is a Must read. A treasure that will stand the test of time. It's beautifully illustrated with over 100 photos. Most of which the public has never seen. The book also comes with a musical CD of the Theme song, and other recordings. One which also includes the voice of Richard Boone himself. I give the book 5 out of 5 stars.

It included many new advanced topics and provided much expanded explanations for the 1989 “mainstay” subjects. While most carpenters consider the current JLC version an essential resource, there are still many folks who desire a copy of the simple, old, rustic, “hand sketched” original edition. To satisfy those folks we have brought the original 1989 version back to life by applying the latest digital scan technology. While the original RCS doesn’t have the flair, detail, completeness and professionalism that the JLC version has, she nonetheless does a good job of covering all the truly “need to know” framing subjects in a uniquely useful KISS fashion. If you plan to purchase this book as text to accompany The Complicated Roof – A Cut and Stack Workbook (2009), it unfortunately will not correlate. About the Author
Will began his career in construction as a job-site laborer with a shovel in his hands. Blessed with the knack to drive nails he found a good fit in rough carpentry. While working in the Los Angeles housing tracts in the mid-70s Will had the opportunity to learn production roof cutting and stacking. Ever since those early days, roofs have been his forte. Lacking the technical side of his profession he made time to attend the Construction program at Orange Coast College graduating with an AA degree. When roof trusses gained prominence in the late-70s he left SCal and moved north into the custom home market along the California central coast. There with his crew he spent the next 14 yrs specializing in framing custom homes with complicated roofs. During that time he wrote his first book entitled A Roof Cutter’s Secrets to Framing the Custom Home (1989) and earned a BA thru night school. In 1992 after 20yrs in the industry, Will began working as a freelance framing consultant and “traveling roof cutter”. He did this primarily so he could divide his time between his other interests of bush flying (he is a commercial pilot and aircraft mechanic), whitewater river guiding and humanitarian aid projects. In his new capacity he participated in the building of many interesting projects on both coasts. From 1992–2002 he had the unique experience to be able to teach roof framing seminars/workshops at “JLC Live” conferences. The video of his 1997 roof framing presentation at the JLC Live East conference was edited into a commercial video and is available from various vendors. In 1996 Will developed “The Headcutter” (patent 6038775). He invented this devise to replace the venerable sidewinder blade that he had used for many decades when cutting roofs. “The Headcutter” (Big Foot Tools) is an adjustable saw foot that clamps to the bar of a chainsaw converting it into a vertical milling machine. It is terrific to gang-cut the head-cuts/tail-cuts on common rafters packages, square-cut TJI packages and trim insulated roof panels. Will used this tool along with other custom saws to help set up a production roof cutting division at National Lumber (Boston) in 2001. In 2002 after four years in the works, Hanley Wood republished an updated version of Will’s original 1989 book A Roof Cutter’s Secrets in a modern day format. In 2009, Will produced his most recent work entitled The Complicated Roof – A cut and stack workbook, as a companion guide to his mainstay.

This is not for the weak minded - keep in mind that roof framing is the most complicated of all carpentry and almost no one knows how to do it - put it this way, my husband makes a great living doing almost nothing but roof framing. This is the book for someone who seriously wants to learn a real craft and be a competent and respected carpenter.

Thanks to this book and the construction master pro, I have framed many a custom home. The largest was 8,700 SQ FT with 12/12 cut and stack. This book led the way. If you are starting out in construction don't wait and get the book.

Excellent Adventure Tale

I just finished reading this book for the second time. It's truly a great story about a canoeing adventure that took place back when much of the Canadian wilderness was still wild. The canoeists encounter Cree indians who live in the bush, and forts isolated from all roads--fragments of a past long gone.

It really is a shame their accomplishment has faded into obscurity. Searching the Web will find you virtually nothing about these two men and their voyage. Even the dearth of reviewers on this site is sad. They worked so hard to make this trip, expecting to make the history books, and then got mostly ignored.

Though some may want more details, I felt what was included was more than enough to give a sense of this trip, the hardships and joys. True, it would have been nice to hear the "co-commander's" viewpoints; the author talked only to one of the two men (Shell) on the trip. And while his disparaging comments on his friend were often amusing, if mean, it made you wonder what the other guy (Jeff) would have said about the same incidents. Still, at least Shell was honest about his feelings, and didn't whitewash the trip.

I loved reading about their encounters with various people living out in the wild, imaging these people living and dying with no record of their lives--until this book came out. The lighthouse keeper and his bed full of bugs, the Cree Indians who ate all the boys' bannock but then surprised them with their generosity, the hard-drinking people at the fort where they wintered--these people are all gone now, but thanks to this book, a portion of their lives has been brought back for us to learn about.

The book is very well written, but more importantly entertaining and interesting.

Wish I could have gone - except for the bugs!

The canoe trip of New York to Nome is an exceptional adventure. Although told many years later, it still brings the excitement of the trip to life. The book is a bit thin on details, I wished for more on how they packed, the gear they carried, how they set up camp. I wanted to know more because I love to sea kayak and camp and have gone on many multiday trips covering a hundred miles or more. But those trips are nothing compared to this one.

Great book for adventurers who enjoy paddling, camping and the outdoors.

Very Inspirational Book- It will change your outlook on life

This book changed my outlook on life. After reading Prison to Praise I began to see the benefit of what Merlin Carothers was saying about the importance of praising God. Walking and Leaping is Mr. Carothers story of his journey from Indiana to California. This story proves that God is in control, God loves His children and you don't ever have to worry about anything. Our goal in life is to live today, try to find out what is God's specific plan for us (and then do everything you can to fulfil that plan) and to praise God in every circumstance! God Bless Merlin Carothers!

Had to replace a lost copy

Years and years ago I had read Carother's books on the power of praise and they so changed my life and my relationship with God. In all of my loves I managed to either loan them out with out getting them back or they were otherwise lost. Until you read his series on praising God you can not adequately release God's power into your life. Not that you are to praise God because things go wrong in your life. You Praise HIM because even though things go wrong you know that God is still in charge and that nothing takes HIM by surprise. God's power seems to ride on the waves of our Praise. This book is full of examples of how our praise of God releases HIS power into our world.
