Decades after Jessica Mitford stunned America with vivid accounts of corruption and abuse in the death industry, not much has improved. Families are manipulated into buying expensive goods and services they don't need or want. Prepaid funeral money vanishes into thin air. Body parts are sold on the black market. Eight states force families to pay a funeral director even if they conduct a home funeral with no need for help. But a consumer movement is no awakening, and Americans are asserting their rights over a key part of life, just as they did in the past with the natural childbirth and hospice movements. The two most prominent leaders of that movement are the authors of this book: Joshua Slocum, executive director of Funeral Consumers Alliance, and Lisa Carlson, executive director of Funeral Ethics Organization. Here they join forces to expose wrongdoing, inform consumers of their rights, and propose legal reforms. The book includes state-by-state summaries of laws, regulations, services, and consumer concerns.

This book helped me cut $2000 from the funeral director's price list
By Karen Kernan
Although I am a hospice volunteer, I was completely unaware of a new consumer movement that is taking back control from the funeral industry over what happens to a loved ones body between the moment of death and the final burial or dispersion of the remains.
Because I read this book, I knew how to cut $2000 from the price list presented by a funeral director yesterday, and knew how to negotiate for just the services we will actually want. More importantly, I was clear in my own mind and heart about the roles that family and friends could play in a meaningful ceremony - instead of just being passive observers.
Final Rights: Re-claiming the American Way of Death, delivers exactly what Lisa Carlson and Joshua Slocum promise in their title. It is filled with wonderful examples of families lovingly caring for their own dead. I was surprised to learn that services involving embalming, fancy casket, open-casket wake, funeral ceremony, procession, and graveside service "have no roots in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or any other religion," and that a so-called "traditional funeral" is a relatively recent commercial invention, seldom seen outside the U.S. and Canada. In many countries, the predominant method of burial is still with a shroud and no coffin.
The first half of the book will leave you outraged at the many self-serving and deceptive practices of the funeral industry, but you'll learn how to protect yourself, both emotionally and financially. The second half of the book details the laws in each state that affect consumers' rights and options.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. But my review is probably not necessary, because the authors' websites, funeralethics.org and funerals.org, rank so high in online searches that anyone looking for information on consumer protection, funeral costs, and home funerals, will quickly discover this book as the definitive resource and discover the authors, Slocum and Carlson at the front line of defense for consumers.
I personally don't think that too many families will actually want to take complete charge, from washing the body to burying it on their own land, but every family wants protection from the potential overcharges or abuses of a $15-billion funeral industry. Final Rights is the only book of it's kind. Fortunately, it's the only one you need.

Consumer Awareness
By P. Ashwood
Well done book on the experts on funeral consumer issues. Covers the areas where a consumer is most likely to have trouble as they navigate the mysterious ways of the funeral industry. The first 149 pages are the most interesting. The rest of the book is basically an update of Carlson's "Caring For The Dead" with the funeral laws of the 50 states. Useful for comparisons and for reference.

The Consumer Reports book on the funeral industry.
By Kindle Customer
I have had this book since June of last year. And this book gives you the information to make choices on a funeral, without the funeral director. I build pine caskets for people as a alternative to the higher prices that a funeral home will charge. And when people come to see me about a casket, I always show them this book. It has helped them to know what you do and DO NOT have to pay when it comes to a funeral. The funeral industry takes advantage($$$) of too many grieving family's. So to quote a old saying "knowledge is power". In this case power to make decisions to keep your hard earned dollars in your wallet. I do not have a "grudge" against funeral directors in general, just the ones who take advantage of people in a time of need.
Update 3/10/2015 since my last review on this book in 2012 I have used the information in this book to help uniformed customers facing the funeral industry so many times, that I have stopped counting. And the results are always the same. I don't have to do this or that for a funeral? I didn't know that? Or the funeral director said I needed this.. but I don't? People learn the ins and outs of what they do and do not need for a funeral. For a few they do a funeral without the funeral home's help. But for most they learn how to say no thanks to unneeded extra funeral items. And usually they can cut their funeral home cost in half.
Most funeral directors are basically good people and they want to help families. But for them trying to figure out (everyone flunks mind reading class in high school) what you really want for a funeral when you are upset, grieving and not in the best frame of mind... is a set up for paying more than you need to. Reading this book is a good start before that day comes... and it will for everyone eventually. Because nobody gets out of life alive.
