In 1939, Samelson, now a professor at Trinity University (Tex.), was an 11-year old violin prodigy living in Poland. A year later, he had a secret bar mitzvah in a Nazi labor camp. His mother and sister had been sent to their deaths; he and his brother escaped and became members of a group of partisans. Captured, they were returned to a camp and later liberated to join a father subsumed by the hatred that had helped him to survive, and a postwar world in which many Nazis went unpunished. Eventually Samelson came to the realization that some of his enemies had been caught, as he and his family were caught, in the machinery of evil. "One condemned understands another," he writes in this heartfelt memoir that is affecting for its intensity and as a survivor's search for an affirmative post-Holocaust life.

This fictionalized memoir of a young Jewish boy's harrowing experiences surviving the Holocaust in Poland is a testament to the individual's will to survive. Vilek Samelson sees his family disappear one by one. His grandfather, whose faith in God has been of great support to the boy, is shot. His grandmother is burned in the synagogue. His mother and sister are transported to Treblinka, while he and his brother survive forced labor, life with the partisans, and finally a series of concentration camps. Vilek's story is one that must continually be retold. However, the author, himself a survivor of Buchenwald, would have been better served by telling the story of his life as fact , since fictionalizing it trivializes it, and the format lacks the tension of a genuine novel. Purchase where appropriate.

About the Author
Dr. William Samelson was born in Poland. At the age of eleven, he was interned in various Nazi ghettoes and slave labor-death camps for six-and-a-half years. Liberated on 1May 1945 by the U.S. Army, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1948. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and he taught in various Universities and Colleges throughout the U.S. and abroad. He has written extensively on the Holocaust and lectured widely on a variety of topics relating to it.

One Bridge to Life is written so one can vividly see what some people did to survive. Dr. William Samelson is gifted in that he writes in eloquent language with hope and faith. His description of his grandfather, shot and dying in his arms, is very moving for the lesson Dr. Samelson learns.
The incredible testimony of the Rabbi dying in the Synagogue burning testifies that there is more than this world existance. The vision of a burning building, a rabbi exhorting his people to hope, remembrance and love of God is indescribable. I cannot get this picture of a prophet aflame, yet speaking in love, out of my mind.
Dr. Samelson has retained his faith, hope and remembrance. He teaches at a university, and his lectures cause us to remember, to hope, to love and to act. The biggest challenge is for us who read, or hear Dr. Samelson, to do something within our sphere of influence. Remember and yet, forgive: this is his legacy. This book is a "must read" and among the best I've read, for the author lives out his "One Bridge to Life." That bridge is love.

Amazing true story

I learned so much about what the wartime ghettoes were about, and the cruelty of the Polish citizens under Nazi pressure. William, his brother, and their associates were intrepid in their resistiance efforts. I learned that those who survived did not emergence unchanged by their horrific experiences. The story needs to continue to be told.
