Don't waste your money!

This is a horrible waste of paper. It is the paper version of click-bait. There is very little content and less substance. For example under Washington it lists one location to find pyrite, quartz, "and other gems and minerals". Yet Washington has a rich history in gold, silver, garnets, fluorite, amber, fossils, and much, much more. The briefly touch on 6 more locations, then go into museums. This book is a complete waste of time, money, and paper.

Exploration of Jesus the human being

Robert Funk wrote a gem of a book that attempts to tease out the ideas and approaches of Jesus, the man, seperate from the meditations and the symbolic language of biblical writers trying to convey the significance of the risen Christ. The results are thoughtful and, no doubt, controversial. He covers a lot of ground in a very few pages. I believe he also gives us a sense of what Jesus may have been like. For an attempt at de-mythological description, I find it amazingly spiritual. If you find value in trying to put a human face on the man who became a religious icon (as I do) I recomend this book highly.

A small book - huge message

After the "Five gospels ..." Robert D Funk et al tried to take the focus from what did really Jesus said as when he was referred to or just quoted etc to focus on what does his words REALLY tells us about life, future and present state of mind.

Every chapter is preceded by quotes of Jesus' red dotted words from the "Five gospels" and then comes the reflection of Jesus Seminar on these quotes. In their very handy introduction, the reader is informed about the pros and cons of the book: it tries to capture a glimpse of Jesus' message thru the layers of Christian tradition, Judean-Roman historical context, other forerunners (wise teachers before Jesus) but foremost thru our time and our understanding of Jesus.

Our understanding is unique of things past. The most conservative Christians feel this burn in the bosom when they read Jesus' word and life story according to the gospels, I as a liberal Christian, feel the same burning in sharing the bread and wine in the sign and token of unity, love and humbleness. We have people of the Jewish religion having all sorts of perspectives on Jesus - we have Muslims, worshipping him as the beloved prophet of God, but we have also atheists, trying to contact him in his humanness. Somewhere in between we all are lost in the web of the stories around Jesus - his birth, family status, apostles, did he have a wife or not, did he really die or fainted, did he walked on water ...

Thru this web we have a new prism, a new reflection where we can try to listen to the voice - how faint it is - of Jesus when scholars best can catch it. Catch it, not thru revelation, not thru X-ray signals, but thru humbleness: accepting that how much miracle a faith can contain, we have still to do in our terrestrial science with a man, a poor man, walking along Galilean countryside, taking the day as it came, eating what he got from hospitable foreigners, preaching about the MORE of today, the MORE of having a meal - preaching about an alternative life style that we can carry in our lives each hour of our days.

He looked at the nature around him, seeing birds being fed without sowing or ploughing, he saw how great was the hope for a poor woman or man to be at ease with life compared to religious folks and orthodox believers He saw more into life than codes, routines and rituals. He said once: A woman walked with a jar full of food on her head. She didn't know that it was broken, she noticed it when she arrived at home. He likened this whole story to the divine domain of life ("kingdom of god"). It was an empty jar - not filled with delicious food - it was a confident woman, confident in having food when there was not.

Jesus Seminar shows that Jesus never talked about himself as a bridge to god, he saw godhood - the ease of life and hope for tomorrow - in every one of us. It couldn't be given to us thru rituals or a specific living, it would be given only by asking, by searching, by knowing that injustice is only a symptom. Family structures, hierarchy, dividing humans in women, men, sinners, lepers etc are the root of all injustice. See individuals in the leper, in the most outcasts: SEE, UNDERSTAND and FREED yourself from this injustice. The symptom will always be there - but not if you agree on its cause.

Jesus knew that poor and hungry will always be among us - he knew that only charity would make a change - but he also hoped for us to see how captured we are of this so-called reality that we cannot see an alternative. Jesus Seminar couldn't have done it in a more fantastic than this book. Thank you:-)

Beyond Jesus

In some of his writings Robert W. Funk suggests that we shift our focus from an obsession with Jesus to the subject to which he has been pointing all these years. That observation struck me with such power that I have been trying to do that. And this book is one that definitely seeks to accomplish that. Robert W. Funk, founder of Westar Institute as well as the Jesus Seminar but now deceased, describes the vision of Jesus that is found in bits and pieces, embedded in his parables, aphorisms and dialogues, and assembles these fragments to give us a picture of Jesus.

You see, one of the most destructive religious teachings is rooted in a particular notion of faith or belief. Faith, to some, means giving assent to the standard doctrines of one's religious tradition. History is crammed full of the excesses of this view. Even in communions where faith, historically, has been perceived relationally, there is a substantial clamor for "believing the Bible" rather than relating to a person. According to Funk, when faith is defined in this fashion it is regarded as "a supernatural virtue that enables one to believe that God has revealed the divine will through Christ and the church." This is an utter distortion because "faith, understood as trust, involves seeing the world and other people for what they are when viewed through God's eyes." Thus, it is an avenue to the deepest dimensions of reality and to God.

I emphasize what Funk says about faith in this book as a way of "reviewing" it. It is about the fragments that Jesus Seminar fellows have assembled in the database of sayings that comprise the vision of Jesus described in this book.

Hear Funk again in light of the observation I made at the beginning about looking beyond Jesus to kingdom or his "alternative social vision." "A world like the one Jesus envisioned cannot become a universal worldview. To survive, it has to be flattened, simplified, literalized for the masses. When that happens, it is time to start over. It is time for radical transformation and the formation of a new community." "A Credible Jesus: Fragments of A Vision," like all the work of the Jesus Seminar, seeks to liberate Jesus from the mythical matrix by which he has been framed for centuries. He concludes that the Jesus of history was involved in the same conditions of life as a peasant in the first century. In fact, he was a peasant. He was determined to live by his alternative social vision. Funk claims that the challenge Jesus poses isn't so much to follow in his footsteps as it is to catch a glimpse of his vision of life ruled by God's gracious generosity as light for our pathways in the modern world. Just like the others in the series, a real disapointment.

I made the mistake of buying this book NW, as well as NE and SE site unseen hoping it was something like Eckert's series. I was very disapointed. Very few sites are listed, most of those are very well known sites. In fact all of the sites listed in some states are only for mining or mineral museums! This may be a good book for kids or someone just getting started, but since Eckert's book has been republished, I really would point them there first. In fact, 5 minutes on the web can locate all the mining museums located in this book. Save your money for the Eckert series.

One of my favorite travel guides ever.

This is one of my favorite travel guides, ever, period. Even though this book is aimed at sailors, it has plenty of helpful information for land travelers too. Plus it has a lot of information I've never found in another travel guide. The best example is this. One beautiful night as we sat on our terrace enjoying the 180 degree view of the southern skies, I turned to my travel partner and said, "Did you print off those star charts so we can identify the southern cross?" His response. "Uh oh, I never got around to that."

The next day we looked all over the Island of Bequia for a star chart. We were laughed out of stores, some of which even catered to sailors. At one point I suggested maybe the Sailors Guide we have back at the villa will have a star chart. We agreed it was not likely but hot and tired, we decided to go back and see. We get back, look, and sure enough there it is - a star chart of the southern skies along with a date and time table for determining where everything should be and when. Oh my goodness. We had a chart all along. Thank you Sailors Guide!!

We used that star chart every night for the rest of the week and had a blast locating and identifying all the constellations we could see. It was fascinating watching the southern cross gradually rotate around the point in the sky where the south axis of the earth intersects with the southern sky. Ah, the pace of life on Bequia and the joy of a guide book that delivers way more than expected.

A good guide with excellent photos

A good guide with excellent photos, but loaded with ads and praising commentary on many of the advertisers. It does not adhere to the Consumer Reports or Practical Sailor model of independent commentary.

The IMRAY guides for the Med should be used as a model of sturdy, well-constructed cruising guides. Paying $30 for a spiral bound book with ads is a little annoying.

Carefully laid out, the book groups city sights into seven sections of related activities. Steves makes no bones about the area's wet, cool climate, suggesting that a visitor bring a raincoat and a backpack to stash it in while the sun shines. This book was great! We took our two boys with us (ages 4 & 6) and we couldn't fit in all the activities we wanted to do. I have relatives in Seattle, and visited there a lot growing up. This book covers ALL the highlights, gives great directions and reference information and is fun for the kids to look at too!
I wish I could get more books just like this one for every city we visit!

"Following mergers and renaming, N&W steam enjoyed a brief reprieve in 1982-1994 with the return of two famed locomotives. While it lasted, those who had missed the "Grand Show" were treated to a sampling of what it was like, courtesy of J-class 4-8-4 Number 611 and articulated Class A 2-6-6-4 Number 1218. Both were among the over 400 steam engines constructed at Roanoke Shops over the 70 year period of 1883-1953. "This tome is a personal pictorial of the final decades of smoking steam action on the Norfolk and Western. It is a photographic study of guts, grime and power as everything from small consolidations and "Mollies" to husky double-headed 2-8-8-2s moved coal trains to Tidewater and the Midwest. "This is also the story of a railroad that took pride in its passenger service, be it a Pacific powered three car local on the "Clinch Valley" run, a single combine behind a branchline mixed, or a streamstyled Tuscan Red J pulling a matched consist on a name train - the N&W had class. Mineral News, March, 1996 This is the first comprehensive book on the geology, history, and lore of the gemstones and gem deposits of Afghanistan. This book is well documented and the reference list of each chapter is extensive. Although, most of these references are on the history and geography of Afghanistan, there are many references on the geology and gemstones. The authors have been associated with Afghanistan gemstones and mining for many years. They have worked with three Afghan governments, the Soviets, and the Afghan miners developing the gem deposits. This book takes the reader through the history of Afghanistan, to the recent war with the Soviets into the present times. The Geology is explained with information on the region and descriptions of each deposit. The discovery of each deposit is discussed as well as the present situation and mining. ....Naturally this book's emphasis is on gem materials, but there is much here for the mineral collector too. Obviously, most gem deposits also produce specimens suitable for any mineral collection and many of the deposits described have produced specimens that make it to the mineral market and not the gem cutting tables around the world. About the Author
Gary W. Bowersox, an international gem hunter, has worked with three Afghan governments, the Soviets, and the mujahideen through the back door of Pakistan to export gem and mineral materials. Through his affiliation with the Gemological Institute of America and other organizations, Gary has brought recognition since 1972 to the quality of the gemstones mined in the Hindu Kush, most of which were unknown until the Soviets started bombing and exposing the crystals.

Bonita E. Chamberlin received her Ph.D.in paleontology from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Columbia. She has worked internationally, first in her field, and later expanding into economic development. She both organized the seminars and teaches Afghans mining techniques. Throughout the year, she also consults in international economic development for multinational corporations, and teaches seminars on cross-cultural communication.

Dense as Gold beautiful as Diamonds

I bought this used and I don't know why anyone would have sold a signed copy. The language can be very technical but provides a great level of detail. The lat/long of the mines at the end was a nice touch. I have so much respect for the authors' daring adventure to wite this book.

An excellent introduction to the precious gem trade (both legal and illegal) in Afghanistan, from historical times to the present. Stunning photographs or gems in both their original stone matrix and faceted, and many photographs of the gem mining regions of the country. An excellent introduction to the jewel resources of this war-torn country, and the geology behind the gemstones.
