This winner of the Benjamin Franklin award many years ago is still relevant and effective today. Those who believe in fighting first can always seem to find a problem with other people and they always seem to be able to find people on which to inflict violence who are unable to resist. I work with many people just like this and can confirm that the ideas explained and illustrated in this book are effective, from having put them in to daily practice. I've used personally this recourse to learn how to effectively get along with both aggressive managers and bully coworkers. So, I think this book can be considered an effective resource for adults or children. Consider also, that while this book describing a resource for youth, the exercises are hardly childish nor are they always easy to accomplish.
When one decides to face violence directly it can be scary and even dangerous. While few people wish to be harmed themselves bullies doe often still seem to be good at promising violence as they are at following up on their promises. The implicit promise one will find in this book is that bullies violence can avoided or stopped altogether. By putting this books ideas and methods into practice, one can discover this to be true. However, for the dangerous and violent bullies -- who more than bullies -- we can want to prepare to defend ourselves.
We may therefore discover the thread of hope that binds together Dr. T's text, and even on the cover illustration, is that the bully and victim cycle can be broken without violence. We may discover that martial arts training is not primarily an outlet for our own violent tendencies to suppress things that we dislike. Through our application of the many stories, models, skills and patterns found within this carefully thought-out guide; we may discover that both we and our children can both escape the cycle of violence. Therefore, I always recommend this volume to all of my own students, as has my sensei. It therefore seems reasonable from my own success and those of the many hundres of students within my own lineage that relied on this book during their own early years, that Dr. T's entire series is the gold standard for a balanced martial arts education; for a student that does not fear to ask "Why?".

Useless

First, the reviews for this awful book are from the guy who wrote it (or his wife), and some lady who co-write another book with him. These people are without a shred of character or honesty. Don't buy this book.
The guy has no real doctorate from any accredited institution and yet refers to himself as doctor on every possible occasion. And, if he has an actual Black Belt in anything, it isn't listed anywhere that I know of.
To be a passivist one must have been a warrior, not just passing on some sad issue from his own childhood and inflicting it on actual martial artist community. He should stay out of the martial arts and maybe write books about dance studios or hippie communes, because this kind of junk will get your kid beat up badly in the real world. If you look closely it is the philosophy of failure and cowardly, dishonest action. He would have done very well in the German occupation of France. If you allow your son to read this book, you are participating in the further feminization of his future. Not a bad thing maybe, as these people are in a full-on war against anything masculine or realistic. But, like it or not, there are a few human male warriors left. We aren't violent, but that is because our enemies fear us and we have been in the battle and realize it is nasty. For a warrior, the last resort is violence; for a lying cowering simp, every day is a defeat.
Why not allow your son to be initiated into a warrior tradition like Shotokan or Jujitsu instead of reading this pure psuedo-intellectual junk.
But that's just my opinion, and I may just be out of touch with the new sensitivity. Thank goodness.
