About the Author
J. D. Wade, a lifetime resident of the Puget Sound area, began playing and digging on shellfish beaches at an early age. As an adult he helped organize a Hood Canal seafood business, harvesting clams and oysters for private beach owners. He also was a commercial prawn fisher. J.D. has become a strong, vocal advocate of shellfish conservation and is well know by Washington state legislators, having testified many times on seafood conservation issues before the House and Senate Natural Resources Committees. As a volunteer member of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Crab Advisory Group, he keeps his finger on the pulse of Puget Sound shellfish issues. J.D. has been a sought-after speaker at the Seattle Boat Show as well as many other sports shows around the state. In this role, J.D. promotes the fun of shellfishing while at the same time supporting the conservation of our fragil resources.

Step right up and get your own geoduck

I'll save you some trouble: those that don't like the taste of clams, oysters, crab, or shrimp might as well click on something else. This book will be a waste of their time. They can go to the fridge and pull out some Cheez Whiz® or little, canned sausages made of assorted "meat products." Enjoy.
Those who love shellfish, though, will love the "Evergreen Pacific Shellfish Guide," authored by J.D. Wade. Wade helps shellfish harvesters work their way through maps, messy regulations, and many methods of harvest.
Want to know how to shuck an oyster or clean a crab? Here's where you can find out. Wade also includes a few recipes, which I can't vouch for. Most of them look to be safe, but hey, no guarantees. Anything that contains "orange zest," for instance, you eat at your own risk.
Wade even tells how to prepare a sea cucumber for the pot. I didn't notice any recipes, though, that included the critter. That's probably a good thing.
The book's strongest point, perhaps, is the use of clear maps showing harvest areas. One set of maps, for instance, illustrates year-round recreational crab fisheries in four colors, depicting zones where only a recreational harvest is allowed, and those that also serve as Limited Commercial Zones (along with dates), or Tribal Exclusive Zones (where only tribes can fish commercially, but others can fish recreationally).
Most of the illustrations, charts and tables included in the book are well constructed. I especially liked inclusion of sewer outlets in the final group of beach maps.
One item that confused me, though, was the "Where The Clams Are" table on page 16. Razor clams are shown in the "medium to high tide zone," at a depth of about six to ten inches. Earlier, Wade states that razor clams "are always found below Mean Low Low Water, which means you can only harvest them during `minus' low tides." I had trouble reconciling the statement with the table.
I guess that information isn't critical, anyway. During one of the too rare openings, the eager clam digger only has to get to a proper beach (shown on page nine) and follow the crowds of people. The trouble will be digging the clams, and Wade certainly gives good instructions about that.
Other good tips include how to "purge" mussels and clams of sand, how deep to place a pot while fishing for spot prawns, and when oysters are best to eat.
If readers are looking for eloquent prose, they might be disappointed. Readers will have to wrestle with phrases like "abundant numbers of crabs," or three sentences in a row starting with the word "this." But maybe this is only a problem for me.
The "Shellfish Guide" comes with a spiral binding, making it convenient to take on an outing. Get hold of a copy while you can - they're disappearing like geoducks.

Old J.D. has been trapping, digging, grabbing clams, mussels, crabs for numerous decades. His book is pretty much the standard where-to/when-to/how-to guide for us pacific northwesterners.
I've bought it several times. Somehow my marina friends forget to give it back.

Surfers and "Strange Visitors"

There's a lot of less accomplished cartoonists in this volume of Meatmen - A.J. Toos, "Farraday", Sean Martin - who bring the average visual appeal per page down a notch. Which is a great shame, because others of the regulars are in prime form.

Not only do we get a vintage Tom of Finland piece, "Highway Patrol", but 'Stephen' pulls out his best ToF homage (i.e. French for rip-off) in "Night Flight". Series regulars Jeff Krell, Kurt Erichsen and Gerard Donelan are excellent, a delightful sequnece from Jerry Mills' "Poppers" is a joy, and 'I.B. Gittendowne's' strips, which are a trifle hard to read owing to the odd reproduction, reward the squinting with a dry, sly wit under the slapstick.

Star of the show, however, is Stephen Lowther's work - and while I may be called a prejudiced witness, since Stephen's a frequent collaborator of mine, I can praise him without bias in this instance, as the two strips in this volume were entirely his own work.

"Harry the Flying Pyramid" is a delightful comedy about an extra-dimensional visitor who is bewildered by the weird and baffling world of Earth; a heady blend of modern cynicism, psychedelic ramblings and vintage "Carry On" style humour, its a joy to read.

And "Unfair Exchange" is a delicious body-swap comedy, where implausibly-endowed surfer dudes and mad scientists clash.

"Harry the Flying Pyramid" is now printed in full-colour in the Bruno Gmunder book, "Prime Cuts" (also available from those lovely people at Amazon!), but - COMPLETIST ALERT! - Meatmen 10 is, so far, the only source for "Unfair Exchange", and the full-colour front & back covers Stephen provided top off the package nicely.

Surfers, Sci-Fi, and SEX (in general)

Another fun collection of gay comics, from 1991. Highlights include:

"UNFAIR EXCHANGE" and "HARRY THE FLYING PYRAMID", both by STEPHEN LOWTHER, who brings his "mainstream" art style to tales involving unrequited lust, mind-swapping, and a very peculiar alien from outer space. Lowther also supplies front and back color covers for this volume!

"WORKING THE SHAFT" by "SEAN" -- elevator repairmen get sidetracked from the job at hand.

Other highlights: "MURPHY'S MANOR" by Kurt Erichsen; "JAYSON" by Jeffrey A. Krell; "KAKE: HIGHWAY PATROL" and "NIGHT FLIGHT" by "Tom Of Finland"; "POPPERS" by Jerry Mills; "CATHARTIC COMICS" featuring The Brown Bomber & Diva Touche Flambe by "Prof. I.B. Gittendowne", a super-hero parody; 5 cartoons by A.J.Toos and 10 by Gerald Donelan.

The recipe names are simultaneously suggestive and goofy (One Night Stand, Wok on the Wild Side), and the menus include both naughty and nice suggestions, making Playful Gourmets, one in a series of Cooking in the Nude cookbooks, as much fun to read as it is to cook from.

An Overlooked Gem

We've been making the recipes from this booklet since 1999 and have rarely been disappointed. Several recipes are now family faves- sizzling Japanese Steakhouse Chicken, the earthy Fettucine with Wild Mushroom Sauce, Peking Chicken- and not because they are low-fat but because they taste great. The low fat is just icing on the cake. Guiltless dining. Love it. A little gem that is easy to overlook.

Steven is more well known for his BBQ books, but if you can find this book you should try it. A bargain. I wish he'd re-print it and add more recipes.

The only downside is the top-bound easel format. It can make it hard to follow a recipe as you flip and twist pages to read the recipe.

About the Author
Victor C. Pellegrino is professor emeritus, University of Hawaii-Maui Community College, where he served as chairperson of the Language Arts Division and taught Eastern and Western Literature, British and American Literature, and Compositon. He was a Fulbright Scholar in India. He has authored nine books, six of which focus on writing. He has also written poetry, a book on Italian cooking, and philosophical aphorisms.

I was really impressed with the format of this little book. It is so easy to go down through the tabs and find a transitional word or expression that just fits your needs. My High School children really enjoy sprucing up there papers with it also. I think it is a wonderful writing tool. It is a little book packed with big helpers.

Easy Transitional Guide

This guide is easy to use and makes writing effortless. It can also be a tool for middle and high school students. The book is filled with basic words that can be used in everyday writing. I have been using this guide for over eight years. I receive a lot of oohs and aahs from co workers on this handy resource. It is a must have for any school student and an addition to any library.

I had expected the book to have more pages and content. Instead, what it gave was basically some lists of words and expressions which might be found in other general grammar and language books. If I had known that this book was going to be merely a list of all those expressions given in it, and contained merely just a few pages, I would definitely not have ordered it. Hence I was very disappointed in it. It did not provide me with any new knowledge, or anything unusual and memorable for language application.

Thomas and Jennie Wiley lived on Walker's Creek in Bland County, Virginia. In 1789, a small band of Indians attacked the Wiley cabin and killed Jennie's three older children and her brother. Jennie was taken captive along with her baby son.

Quickly, the Indians and their captives moved westward into what is now Kentucky. Jennie's only hope for herself and her child was to keep pace with her captors. The Indians moved northwest into the Big Sandy Valley of Kentucky. Unable to cross the flooded Ohio River, they retreated to a series of winter camps in present day Carter, Lawrence, and Johnson (Kentucky) Counties.

With only a rock bluff for shelter, Jennie spent the winter laboring as a slave. After almost a year in captivity, Jennie escaped, miraculously evading pursuit as she made her way to a small settlement at Harman's Station on John's Creek, where settlers helped her return to her husband.

The author, Arville Wheeler, was inspired to write this book, because his grandmother told him the story of Jennie Wiley when he was a child. It's a great book for readers in grades 4-8, but teenagers and adults will enjoy it, too.

Taken Back In Time

It has been quite a few years since I read this book. My grandmother owned it. I thought it was a very good book. It hit close to home to me, because Jennie Wiley is my seventh great-grandmother. Reading this book brought me close to my family history. I was able to learn more about how life was back then and the things that happened. I plan to buy my own copy, so that I can share the story with my children.

Other places, Other Pleasures

Bob Vickery stands as close to the top of excellent male erotic writing as may be possible. Interestingly,based on the publication date, this is one of his earlier collections. And that's important as several later anthologies borrow heavily from earlier works and one ends up with something old something new but always something very blue. My problem is that this is an author I admire and enjoy so to purchase a book that's partially retread is annoying. But not here.

Vickery's enormous talent is to take characters that are not standard issue and locate them in interesting and compelling locations. Think sex in a pool is mundane? How about if you have to be in the pool to avoid being incinerated by a raging fire. His people are real and easily identified with. Whether you can imagine being a trapper of beaver skins or a suburban dad on a bus, you'll find them all interesting. Whatever it is they're after you want them to find it but you're as interested in how they find it as what the payoff may be.

Another advantage is his choice of locations. Other authors should take note that not all gay-themed books are mandated to take place in San Francisco or New York. Vickery wanders around the country from backwoods to backyards. It's an invigorating change from the overworked venues of other writers.

His handling of sex goes far beyond the AAARRRGGGHHHH

OOOOOwwwOOOO that in many books seems more to do with BATMAN then sex. He gives us their motivation for wanting sex, beyond just the prosaic, "it feels good" and finds wide varieties of needs and how they should be fulfilled. You'll like these guys, flaws and all.

As has been previously cited, the titles are silly. Accurate but silly. One wonders how a competent editor didn't suggest some changes. Still, a title isn't the story so just scan down and prepare to enjoy some of the best writing in this genre. Made perhaps even better as this is earlier and less expanded then would be later stories. The compact, precise words convey it all.

Bob Vickery, whatever his topic, is always worth reading. He's an investment that is guaranteed to deliver as he does here.

A delicious, rousing collection of erotica

Bob Vickery, whoever he might be, has a way with words and a nice sense of character and place, and he's able to do that rare thing - write harcore sex scenes that actually arouse and capture a sense of gay men's desires. Like the previous reviewer, I find the titles of the stories silly and unimaginative. But don't let that stop you from dipping into a first-rate collection. In fact, you'll find it hard to read just one tale at a time. And yes, that was a pun.

A surprisingly well-written, hot book of gay erotica

I found "Cock Tales" to be a great read: sexy, well-written, sometimes funny, sometimes touching, even sometimes haunting. The stories avoid the standard porn cliches and actually have real plots and characters. The only quibble I might have is with the story titles, which sometimes get a little silly ("Fireman Nick Slides Down the Pole", "69ing on a Stormy Sea")but the actual stories are well-crafted and fun to read. I highly recommend the book.

Amazing good biography ...

I really enjoyed this book, knowing very little about Kiekhaefer before, although my parents were a Mercury dealer 1957-'61. An unforgetable moment was when a Mark 55H was unpacked at our store, ordered by a lawyer with a Class D Speedliner. I got to take it out of mothballs and air it out once in the 1980s. Amazing motor. And the story is about an amazing man who lived and breathed: compete and win.

Really interesting that the man who built the world's fastest outboards in the era 1949-'64 grew up on a farm repairing heavy machinery, had never set foot in a boat (the author points out that Robert McCulloch raced outboards in college), and whose aim was to build magnetic separators for livestock feedlots when he fell by accident into the defunct Thor outboard factory. The author apparently tells the whole tale of E.C.K. as he knows it, girlfriends, awful temper, paranoia and all, which makes for a first rate biography. That is, Kiekhaefer (whon some local yokels persisted in calling Kefauver) was a ---, but as one said of others like Patton, he was a magnificient ---.

I remember the photo of my Dad standing by the first (red) Mark 75 that arrived in our store in spring, '57, and the twice around the world endurance run at Lake X with two Raveau powered Mark 75s (I also recall reading the factory bulletins). Rodengen tells the tale of cheating and manipulation, how key parts and even powerheads were illegally changed while someone took the auto club observers out to eat. However, his statement that they 'pulled the heads' to clean the carbon from the exhaust ports is technically wrong, they perhaps pulled the exhaust water jacket to clean the ports. Every inline Mercury had a 1-piece block, there was no cylinder head. I liked very much the descriptions of Strang and Rose (both MIT engineers) and Jost. I knew and liked Edgar Rose and Jim Jost during my OPC racing 1977-'85 (although Edgar Rose was widely disliked with respect, he was in charge of motor inspection for APBA), and recall how Charlie Strang appeard at APBA National Championships with his mother. Wonderful story how, while Kiekhaefer was squandering money and engineering effort on car racing, Strang secretly created the first 6 cyl. prototype by cutting and welding 2 4 cyl. blocks and 3 2-cyl. cranks! But that was anyway how Kiekhaefer made the first 4 cyl. prototype from two 2 cyl. blocks and cranks. My father, who was very active in NOA racing, complained to Kiekhaefer Corp. about the enormous size and low gearing of the Mark 75,78, and Merc 800 gearcases. The results, nearly too late in 1960, were the speedmaster and sportsmaster gearcases. The NOA unlimited record was held in 1960 by a John-Rude 75 at about 57 mph on a wooden Allison runabout. The production John-Rude had a high geared stock gearcase that resembled a Quicksilver lower unit. I held the 70-80 cu. in. record at 51 mph with a clubfoot Merc 800 on an Allison. with the sportsmaster gearcase, about the size of a 1975 Evinrude 75 shortshaft but geared higher, I ran nearly 57 mph in 70-80, and both Paul Allison and we broke 60 mph in unlimited (Paul ran over 61, I managed about 60.5). We have the NOA record certificates to prove it, but the records never went into the books because the other drivers voted to outlaw the Allison boats after the fact (this is analogous to Kiekhaefer's persistent NASCAR problems described by Rodengen). In any case Kiekhaefer coundn't stand losing, and neither could we. From 1977-1985 I won 3 APBA National Championships in EP, was US 1 twice, held 2 speed records, and won (with George Laycock driving) the NOA 40-70 Championship in 1981.

On the sob side of the coin, in 1961 after my Dad had gone into debt putting Mercury on the map locally and also in NOA racing, a lethargic but longer established dealer in Knoxville (who left it to Scott and the OMC dominate NOA) took him to court (we sold some motors outside our region), Kiekhaefer corp. supported the dealer and my parents lost the dealership. My Dad was not a Kiekhaefer fan after that.

The book is sadly incomplete: who designed the Mark 78 and Mark 58? Who designed the Merc 800? In particular, who designed the Merc 500, the first production outboard with exhaust tuning? Was it Strang, Rose, Strang and Rose? I think that while Edgar was head of engineering at OMC, Jim Nerstrom actually designed the motors. Or, as is speculated on an outboard website, did O.F. Christner (Qunicy Welding) play a role in designing the 50 cu. in. OMC 3 cyl. looper that I raced 1977-'85?

What I also liked very much: the description of the Mercury-OMC battle to set the world outboard speed record from 1957-about 1990. the last record mentioned is 176+mph on a 3-point hydro powered by an Evinrude V-8 ca. 1990 by Bob Wartinger. Our two young sons sat in the cockpit briefly last summer, the boat is alledgedly headed to a museum in Seattle.

my favorite subject!

This book is full of details few imagined about Kiekhaeffer and Mercury Outboards. Many of his personal triumphs and disasters are explained. Mr. Rodengen has done a very through job of researching the story of a very secretative and often confusing character. Serendipity often followed this gentleman through his amazing career. From early on when outboard motors were not his intended focus, to when he sold Mercury to Brunswick (for what turned out to be a less than favorable deal for him, though he remained well off by average standards) to his last adventure with the rejuvenated Kiekhaeffer Aeromarine as an Offshore racing engine and outdrive maker making him another fortune in boating. The story is very interesting, but the source material for the book is Mr. Rodengen's anthology of of his own magazine articles about Mercury and Kiekhaeffer. While background information was necessary in each magazine installment a little too much remains in each chapter and story for best clarity. I recommend perservering with the writing style to learn this interesting story that is told no where else.

An incredible book for Mercury outboards fanatics

As one who grew up on a marina in central Ky., the outboard "wars" of the 1960-70's were a major part of my life. We were Mercury fanatics in Evinrude country. Rodengen's work on the life of Carl Kiekhaefer is mandatory reading for anyone who worshipped at the Mercury altar. It confirms the genius of Kiekhaefer, and the superiority of his product, while at the same time making clear the weaknesses that ultimately led to the loss of his company to Brunswick, and with it the unique "personality" that made Kiekhaefer Mercury the beloved company of its time.
The most amazing thing to me was the number of engineering accomplishments and the ultimate dominance of the marine industry by the men in black. For any Mercury devotee, this book will literally cause tears in your eyes. I'm glad it was written.

The book just goes over syntax and grammar; it does not give any examples of report writing structure nor provide examples of different reporting formats. In addition, there is no conceptual development because it uses very little report writing terminology.

The forgotten aspects of report writing.

This book was great for the other aspects of public safety report writing. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are just as important as content. The exercises are good practice and there is a section devoted to commonly misspelled words. Those same words are used in the police academy.
