Don K. Ferguson is a former city editor of The Knoxville News-Sentinel and previously served as a News-Sentinel and UPI reporter for fifteen years. His newspaper column "Grammar Gremlins" is published by newspapers in five states. He has presented programs at both state and national meetings in Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts, and Tennessee. He has taught grammar courses at the University of Tennessee. Ferguson is currently chief deputy clerk of the United States District Court in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The best general grammar and usage book around

I think this book should be on every professional's desk. I probably recommend it to my seminar attendees more than any other book.

The book is divided into the following sections:

-Punctuation, Mechanics, and Spelling
-Grammar
-Usage
-Pronunciation and Misused Words
-Vogue Words and Terms
-Who Tells Us What To Say and How To Say It?

As you can tell, from the section titles, this book helps with your writing and speaking. The book also shows how things change over time. For example, datum used to be singular for data and data was plural. Now the word data is used to represent both the singular and the plural.

I love the author's explanation of which versus that. Should I say, "It was the dog that lives next door." or "It was the dog which lives next door."? The technically correct answer: that. However, something like the following would be incorrect:

The food, that consisted of table scraps, was given to the dog.

Instead it should be:

The food, which consisted of table scraps, was given to the dog.

This is because the inserted statement - the one separated by commas - is non-essential information. It is traditional that "that" is used to introduce essential information.

I love this book and think you will to. I read it again every two years. This keeps me in grammatical shape - at least as good as can be expected for a West Virginian like myself (smile).

Grammar Gremlins

Ever wonder what is the correct way to say or write our own language? Well, this guy has put all of our most commom mistakes in one place. I get so aggravated when I hear such lazy grammar usage. But now I have an easy reference to know what is correct and what is not. I also found several I was in question about for myself, and now I know what I have been doing wrong. Want to know the "REAL" and correct usages for "I" and "me" in a sentence? This book spells-it-out.

This book is terribly underwhelming

A great book idea, a poor authority, poorly organized. One should prefer waterboarding to this book. There is some accuracy and design in the book which recommends against capital punishment, but much rehabilitation need be forced upon the author before he is allowed to suffer the public further. I sentence the author to three to five years of hard revision.

A retired Special Agent with the U.S. Treasury Department, and a former city detective, Bob Alexander is a thirty-five year law enforcement veteran. He currently teaches in the Criminal Justice program for Navarro College and is a Master certified Texas Peace Officer. I highly recommend

I wasn't sure what to expect as this is the first biography I've read. My reasons for reading this book were to get a better idea about the American old west and particularly to get insight into the individual Dan Tucker. I enjoyed this book.
This biography is very well researched and documented, in fact, I found the notes and source references so numerous that instead of checking them at every occurrence, I would read several pages before turning to the back of a chapter to read them.

I appreciate the author's reluctance to include unsupported material in this work and when information is used that can't be backed up by more than one source it is made clear to the reader.

As to the reviewer who admits to not even reading the book cover to cover and having gotten his dander up over the author's treatment of famous personalities of the old west like Wyatt Earp; I found these minimal as well as truthful and appropriate to the telling of Dan Tucker's story. One only needs to read beyond the speculative fiction written about these other individuals to know that this author has done his research and accurately touches on those so-called icons of the Wild West.

There was little I found troubling with the exceptions of a few editing issues which occur in many books, the most obvious being the header to a chapter which is not to the one you are reading but rather for the next chapter. There are occasional groups of pages where the main topics are focused on other people and happenings and Dan Tucker is more of a footnote but these are not common throughout the book.

For anyone interested in broadening their knowledge of the American west and of this little known lawman, I highly recommend Dangerous Dan Tucker by Bob Alexander.

Too Much Bashing!

I live in New Mexico and just bought the book. I'm disappointed so far. Alexander is spending far too much ink bashing Wyatt Earp, Bill Hickock and
other lawmen. To say that Dan Tucker is better than these men is silly! Maybe Earp, etc didn't kill as many men as Dan Tucker but they all worked in far more dangerous towns!
If a writer spends so much time denigrating them, it just leaves a cloud over his research. I'll finish the book probably, but wish I'd have gotten it
from a library.
Read it at the store and don't waste your time.

On the trail of a perpetrator... but the wrong one.

EDIT: I find it very interesting that, when I first wrote my review, there were zero reviews of this book on Amazon (the book had been out for a few years). Then suddenly within just a few days of my posting my review, there's a sudden surge in positive reviews for this book, written by people who have just signed up for Amazon. FOR A BOOK THAT ISN'T EVEN SOLD ON HERE. Notice there are no copies for sale... Coincidence? You decide. Could it be that those involved with the book are trying to "adjust" for the one authentic review on here... again, you decide.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I bought this book and consulted with Dr. Rochlitz over the phone for a debilitating mystery health condition. I was desperate, had already been through numerous physicians at that time and he had intriguing hypotheses. Bottom line is I wasted over 2 years chasing phantoms (in this case, what he calls "hidden porphyria") only to realize the the problem was really mercury poisoning (aka Amalgam Illness).

The real disappointment with Rochlitz is that his heart's in the right place (even though he's a cranky dude) but he can't see the forest for the trees on this one. He misinterpreted a hair test that I ordered through him. He read it literally and it showed low values for mercury. Well, if you do any research on the web (see Living Networks' website or "No Amalgam" dot com) you'll quickly realize that most mercury-poisoned folks have hair tests that DON'T show high mercury levels. What *is* common is a phenomenon called "deranged mineral transport" where your values are "scattered" -- meaning many super high or many super low but very few in the mid-range. The reason hair tests often don't show your real toxicity level is because your body is holding onto the mercury and not excreting it. It remains "sequestered" in organs and the brain. This will result in a test showing "low" mercury." Unfortunately for me, Rochlitz didn't know any of this and I lost 2 years to debilitating illness and got sicker, spending thousands of dollars more in "health care" that didn't work.... until I finally got my amalgams removed and began frequent dose chelation according to the work of Dr. Andew Cutler (PhD).

Where porphyria plays into all of this is that some people will show high porphyrins if they are mercury poisoned. I'm not a scientist and can't explain it well here, but you can read about it here: [...]

According to Cutler, "Elevated urine coproporphyrin is suggestive of mercury poisoning (or another toxin) or possibly a genetic disorder. Finding elevated uroporphyrin also indicates toxicity rather than genetics."

So, if you're looking for answers, I highly suggest buying Andrew Cutler's book "Amalgam Illness" before trying this book. I lost two precious years of my life because of one misinterpreted hair test and I don't wish that on anyone. Sure, some of the suggestions in this book are interesting and possibly helpful, but they don't point to the actual *reason* you may be ill.

I’ve read them all from the Rochlitz, and I think this is his greatest work. It has 21 chapters and 6 appendices. It is far ahead of its time and so valuable in describing what the author calls the ultimate causes of CEI (chronic and/or Environmental illnesses). He uses CEI as a better or more encompassing term, which includes CFS, M.E., MCS and other illnesses. But this book is not for those who want a simpleton one problem causes everything, and the fallacy that one magic drug or supplement will cure all. Such people are doomed.

This book, as another reader [MN Bailey] already wrote, includes a bunch of factors besides porphyria that cause the CEI. So porphyria is about a third of the book, but may cause the other problems, the author shows. It includes lists of supplements that frequently cause more harm than good; and a few that may be helpful. But it also shows why some people may not be able to take any supplements, or have to rotate them and not take any daily. Some people indeed have found that supplements can make them worse. So many answers are in this book.

Porphyria involves the body not making the protein heme properly or sufficiently, and also the body producing excess porphyrin compounds, which can be toxic to our cells and organs. There is an extensive discussion on the Cytochrome P450 enzymes that are often deficient in chronically- or allergically-ill people. These enzymes process compounds in foods, and also env. chemicals, some vitamins, and some of our hormones. They are heme proteins, and so are an integral part of the chronic porphyria sufferer’s problems. Rochlitz joins with the dentist Downey in the hypothesis that 20% of [wo]mankind has the genetic defect that—after many types of toxic exposure (with mercury being cited as among the worst)—leads to the chronic, smoldering from of porphyria. And the person then reacts to many foods, chemicals, and EMF. But the porphyria may also lead to mast cell disease and pyroluria, the book shows.

This book goes over in detail how and why the testing for porphyria and the interpretation of lab results are so problematic or corrupt. It lists some better labs including one that has a unique test for mercury-induced porphyria. The author boldly indicates that it appears that porphyria is deliberately hidden from the people. Just as nefarious forces for decades tried to hide such things as asbestos or cigarette smoke being carcinogenic, so too how common porphyria really is is foully hidden or denied. The book cites studies or articles from leading researhers, linking porphyria to fibromyalgia, MCS, Alzheimer’s hypoglycemia, ulcers, asthma, autism, “mental” illness and other probelems.

Get this book, read it thoroughly, and follow its recommendations as far as diet (avoiding certain foods and rotating the rest), do the energy balancing and trigger points depicted, make the lifestyle changes, do the breathing techniques cited, and your health might be greatly improved. I found it incredibly helpful when I had to have my dog euthanased recently. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make - this book with its information and recognition of our feelings helped me not feel so bad about it. My Rock Art Bible

Malotki and McCreery have created a masterpiece with this wonderful book. It contains fabulous photographs of seldom-seen sites, plus numerous drawings that allow the reader to compare various figures found throughout the region. Malotki, I suspect, must have spent much time living among the Hopi (as a teacher, perhaps?) because he has considerable knowledge of the Hopi language and culture, and these insights appear often in his explanation of images and their relationship to one another.

Rock art is one of my great passions, and I've photographed a substantial amount of rock art from Northern AZ, Nevada, and California. Tapamveni is, in my opinion, the very best interpretive book on the subject, though limited to the "Palavayu" area in Northern AZ.

If you want to learn about the role and function of rock art in the culture of the ancient ones (to the extent that this is possible in our modern age), this book is invaluable.

If you're looking for a book that gives directions to rock art sites, this is not it. Due to the prevalence of vandalism and the senseless destruction of our precious cultural resources, locations of sites are kept vague - as they should be.

Keep this book out on the coffee table because you will want to refer to it often.

Petrified Forest area Rock Art

This may be the best book on rock art that I have ever seen. It is comprehensive, attempting to record and analayze all of the rock art of the Petrified Forest area, with some comparison with other areas. The photography is excellent, the research is up to date. Very professional. The only thing that is disappointing for me is that it will not be very much help in finding and viewing the sites that are included. This is because of the fear that the writers rightfully have that people will use it for accessing the original work and possibly damaging it.
