If all the men who claim to have ridden with Pancho Villa had actually done so, Pancho's rebel battalions would have made Mexico resemble a human anthill. -- If your a fan of Pancho Villa this is the book for you. It cuts out the politcal and sociological reasons for Villa's personality and gives the reader what they want pure stories about the Mexican: bandido/revolutionary/womanizer/Robin Hood/ whatever you think of him as. This book is a definite if you are doing research on Mi General or simply for reading enjoyment. It has a bunch of the colorful accounts of men that rode with Villa such as Martin Fierro, (the butcher) Otis Aultman, (legend has it the only man to curse at Villa and live) and many others. It is full of many colorful one of a kind stories that make Pancho Villa who he is. It is definitely worth buying

The first champion of gay rights in England

The writings in this modest volume are of tremendous historical importance as the earliest surviving prose defense of homosexuality published in the 19th century. I do, however, have a few bones to pick with the late mr Symonds. As is so common, he plays a bait-and-switch game by glorifying Greek pederasty and then using it to defend his own form of behavior, which was not pederastic and certainly not platonic. He sneers at the age difference between Hadrian and Antinous, but expects no sneers for his gondoliere relationships. He says that the Greeks believed in hedonism, which he so coyly defines as "the simple enjoyment of life." He neglects to say that what he is really hinting at is the gondoliere relationships, another example of bait-and-switch. He knows only too well that he cannot openly defend his own practices, so he gets on a pedestal and talks an infinite deal of high-minded tosh about Plato and all that. The same thing is true of Edward Carpenter and so many others.

About the Author
Born in Whittier, California in 1962, Randy's family moved to Houston when he was five. His father was a Mechanical Engineer and his mom, a housewife. Randy's mom loved gardening and took a lot of pride in the uniqueness of her back yard. Her wish was that everyone who visited felt they were in a Better Homes & Garden setting. One sister, Terri, is married and lives in Pearland. Randy attended Robert E. Lee high school in Houston and Texas A&M University where he received his first degree in Broadcast Journalism. He returned to A&M to work for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to produce radio and television material, where he also garnered his Masters degree in Agriculture. Part of his job was a spokesperson for the college where he researched and disseminated information on topics like Africanized Honey Bees and Red Imported Fire Ants. He also produced radio and television pieces on everything from beef cattle to horticulture. In 1986 He worked with Bill Zak and Ben Oldag, who then had the KTRH garden show. When Bill Zak retired in December of 1995, John Burrow suggested Randy as a replacement. Now, he and John have formed a new, exciting team. Judging from ratings and the number of advertisers, they are doing an exceptional job.

Strong Women and Strong Writing

No Greater Treasure has to be one of my favorite books. This collection of stories focuses on some of the many strong and crucial women in the history of the Jewish people. The stories are taken from traditional sources and written with beautiful and powerful imagery. I have read every story many times, and and still go back and read them again. These stories are truly inspiring and insightful. A must read.

the perfect bat mitzva present

I got this book for my bat mitzva and really enjoyed it. It was a perfect bat mitzva present. It tells Jewish stories of special women, and for each story gives a verse from eshet chayil that mentions the special traits the women exemplified. Not only did I learn from it, it was also very enjoyable.

Joe Hayes is one of America's premier storytellers. He grew up in a small town in southern Arizona where he learned Spanish from his classmates. As he got older, Joe began gathering old stories from the Southwest. Joe has earned a distinctive role as a bilingual storyteller.

Joe Hayes is one of America's premier storytellers-a nationally recognized teller of tales from the Hispanic, Native American and Anglo cultures. His bilingual Spanish-English tellings have earned him a distinctive place among America's storytellers. His bilingual books are used in schools all over the United States. For twenty-six summers Joe has been the resident storyteller at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe. While scarce in text (an adult can easily read the entire booklet in less than 5 minutes), this simple retelling of a Native American story about how Rattlesnake got his fangs is beautifully illustrated and teaches children not to fear rattlesnakes while also teaching caution and respect. This book is also a parable about the folly of being a bully. I highly recommend this book, not only for children but also for those with a fear of snake. Meet gentle "Soft Child."

Soft Child is a wonderfully sympathetic view of a usually terrifying animal, the rattlesnake. I will never see a snake the same again. The illustrations remind me of Albrect Durer's detailed drawings of animals. Everything is beautiful in creation and this book celebrates that fact.

Vol.12: SCI-FI Edition!

This volume of MEATMEN stands out from most for 2 reasons: it has fewer & longer features, and all have a sci-fi theme.

THE highlight of the book is "HOT PURSUIT", a 40-page opus by artist Stephen Lowther & writer Howard Stangroom (once a member of comics-a.p.a. KLORDNY). Heavy on plot, action & drama, the art is very much in the style of many 1970's Marvel comics, while having it broken into chapters was common among many early-1960's Marvels. Lowther also did both color covers, and alone his contributions would have made a terrific "Annual" in the old days.

"PROJECT EXODUS" is another epic, this one 31 pages in length, but made entirely of full-page illustrations by "Mike". I like his "clean" linework, but his distorted anatomy does little for me. The story of a future Earth about to be abandoned far outshines the visuals, and this may be the best thing I've seen from him.

"CRYOGENICS" seems to have predicted the pilot episode of FUTURAMA by quite a few years, with its hero accidentally frozen, only to awake in a very different world-- where everyone is homosexual! There's been 2 sequels so far, in Vols.15 & 19. "Farraday"'s layouts & storytelling continue to impress me, but I think he'd be better off either improving his drawing, or teaming with a better illustrator to do his stories more justice.

"MASTER OF MASTERS" is something different from "Sean", whose excellent work has appeared in Vols. 1, 2, 6, 10, 12, 14 and 16-21. This time it's all full-page illustrations, which allow much more detail than usual. As I suspected, these "pulp"-style pages originally accompanied a story serialized in LEATHERMAN'S WORKBOOKS Vols. 2-8 (many MEATMEN features are reprints that appeared elsewhere, earlier). Some of the HOTTEST art in this book, these work even without the text!

Gerald Donelan contributes 10 of his always-delightful cartoons; Jeffrey A. Krell's humorous JAYSON has an adventure on another planet; Greg Garcia's "BIG BANG" involves black holes in space; and Kurt Erichsen's "ROBOT LOVE" involves a salesman trying to turn the tide away from mechanical sex BACK to the "organic" variety.

Definitely less sex than usual this time, but absolutely readable throughout.

To VERY Boldly Go...

This volume of the Meatmen series is arguably the strongest, in terms of story content, of the entire series, and while I may be accused of bias - in that my frequent collaborator Stephen Lowther provides much of the interiors, it isn't quite that simple; bear with me.

At the time I (under my original name of Howard Stangroom) and Stephen were commissioned to provide the chapter-work "Hot Pursuit" for Meatmen 12's "Sci-Fi Special", we'd plotted the main beats of the story, and then, after two chapters were written, personal problems prevented me from writing more of the series. Stephen really rose to the challenge, and I don't think you can see, as a reader, the problems we were having. It's still a good, fun, romp, which we approached from two different angles; Stephen was looking at it as an affectionate homage to the old Stan Lee & Jack Kirby sci-fi tales where some clean-limbed square-jawed hero takes on all manner of alien marauders, crosses the galaxy, and still gets home for tea, whereas I regarded it more in the vein of DC's Adam Strange - except the lovely Alannna this time is rather better-endowed than traditionally...

Looking at the rest of the content, though, it's not just Stephen who rose to the challenge; the pseudonymous `Mike', whose work I normally dislike, provides "Project Exodus", a quite charming and lyrical story about Mankind's final farewell to planet Earth. I'll still never be a fan of the artist's oddball perception of anatomy, but the story's easily his best so far, and effectively poignant.

`Farraday', another Meatmen regular whose contributions I usually don't care for, throws in a clever scene with a horny accountant at a cryonics depot doing a Captain America and being re-awoken in a future that's strange... but exciting. Again, the art is haphazard at best, but the dialogue's snappy and engaging.

And those are just the contribs from folks I dislike; when you get onto the good stuff, it's even better!

Sean's "Master of Masters" is a series of detailed and evocative tributes to the old sci-fi pulps, quite removed from his usual style of story; Greg Garcia's imaginative "Big Bang" has an explorer couple heading out to the event horizon for the Biggest Bang of all time; Jeff Krell's "Jayson on Planet 69" has our hapless hero's knack for sabotaging relationships used, in a bizarre way, to save a planet; Kurt Erichsen's "Robot Love" has a future games designer trying to sway the public away from automated sex and back to the good old-fashioned fleshy kind; and even the Gerard Donelan cartoon reprints are much more thematically consistent than usual.

There is less explicit sex in this volume than in many others - though there's still quite a bit, and nudity a'plenty - but there's a huge amount more content than the average, to make the reader laugh, think, and yes, sidle off to a quiet room for some "alone time".

The Stangroom & Lowther story, "Hot Pursuit" is now collected in full-colour (and featuring an extra chapter not printed in Meatmen 12 - COMPLETIST ALERT!), in the "Prime Cuts" paperback from Germany's Bruno Gmunder, also available on Amazon, but the rest of the book is still, by some margin, the most entertaining of the series, with every contributor, even the weaker ones, having considerably `raised the bar' for this volume.

The book tell the truth about a size & weight loss mircle.

I'm Dr. Evans and my before and after photo is listed on page 20. The book describes accurately why most people are not successful with diets long term and why. Calorad does work for most people given enought time and taken properly. If it does not work quickly enough the book describes (pg.35) why certin health challanges may need to be addressed 1st and what some of them may be. On pages 41 to 76 are real testimonies from real users like myself who have had success using Calorad including many helped with other amazing additional health benifites like arthritis that you will want to read about in the book. People have come to say that if something is to good to be true it probably is'nt, but Calorad is true, especially if monitored correctly. Excellent book with great food

I got this book a number of years ago and tonight made the chicken piccata for the first time. It was easy and the sauce has my boyfriend wanting me to try all the recipes. The veal sinatra is great; the boyfriend likes it better with chicken cutlets. The brandied chicken breasts are also good. One dessert that is good has warm baked apples with vanilla ice cream.
These recipes alone make the book a buy.
This is one of my best all time book buys.
The book is designed for men who don't know how to cook...buy it.

This is the most marvelous book tho' written in 1985 - I so wish someone could/would update it! We moved to London for 3 years in 1987 and had a copy that we lived by the first few months, and it was wonderful for our many houseguests as well. I had lost my copy and this year was planning to take my 13 y.o. granddaughter to show her my favorite city for a week - found this book at Amazon, remarkably - supposedly an old copy for $1 plus shipping! It came right away, was like new, and helped me in planning our elaborate itinerary - London has changed but not that much! If the author is not available, maybe I should revise it myself!! If you can get this book and are thinking about visiting this wonderful city for the first time, this book is iancredible and the author's love of the city is so very apparent. Itineraries are laid out for length of visit, as well as interests: ranging from Romantic London, Mariner's London, Shopper's London, Literary London, etc. And it is small enough to carry it with you at all times in your purse!!
