Makes sense of a confusing area of law and economics.

Armentano analyzes and lays waste to the fallacies underlying the standard Chicago school economic analysis of monopolies, and how it has been applied by courts interpreting the antitrust laws.
This book is short and easy to read, and it is an essential supplement for anyone trying to make sense of antitrust law and economics.

Outstanding tour-de-force

Dr. Armentano's book is remarkable and indispensible. Since it it short, do not expect it to be an all-inclusive study of the entire past, present, and future of antitrust law. It is simple, straightforward logic that is often missing when analyzing complex legal problems - even from most economic work in the field.
Antitrust: The Case For Repeal looks closely at the Microsoft case and uses it almost allegorically to condemn the entire practice of antitrust law in the United States. He showcases the inherent contradictions, the arbitrary law, and the self-defeating nature of antitrust legislation. His scholarship is impeccable and the writing is smooth. This book should be a tremendous resource for any research done in the field and also excellent intellectual reading for anyone interested in a common-sense approach to antitrust.

Concise Introduction to Antitrust Law (with citations!)

For the length of this book (106 pages, sans index), the delivery was very concise and dense. The book is both layperson and student-friendly; the text has citations that direct a more thorough understanding of the book (including a good article by Thomas DiLorenzo concerning the Origins of Antitrust that can be had for free on mises.org), and also utilizes enough mainstream economic theory to allow students to cross-apply arguments to current economic studies.
Armentano delivers an acute, crisp take on the principles at the base of antitrust policies. He addresses widely-used assumptive errors underlying economic models used as justification for antitrust laws. And if you're wondering who benefits from antitrust: Over 90% of the cases, he explains, are begun by private companies against private companies. So much for benevolent government watching out for intellectually lackluster consumers.
Speaking of consumers, why is it that whenever antitrust advocates speak of that mystical class of individuals, inevitably they are caricatured as bereft of any sense concerning what to do with their own money? This is just one of the numerous fallacies underlying antitrust-advocates' arguments that Armentano addresses.
An excellent introduction to the basis of antitrust argumentation, with overviews of relevant court cases, and a good companion to courses in antitrust law or industrial organization.

About the Author
The author was born in 1943, and experienced his earliest years of life in eastern Utah's Uinta Basin; first near the town of Myton, then Roosevelt. In 1954, the family moved to Provo, where he attended Provo High School, and later Brigham Young University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Sociology. Shortly thereafter he discovered that was the wrong subject, so he attended the University of Utah, where he received his Master of Science degree in Geography, finishing that in June, 1970.

It was then real life began, for on June 9, 1970, he put a pack on his back and started traveling for the first time. Since then he has seen 223 countries, republics, islands, or island groups. All this wandering has resulted in a number of books written and published by himself. Timpanogos; River Guide to Canyonlands National Park & Vicinity; Hiking, Biking and Exploring Canyonlands National Park & Vicinity; The Story of Black Rock, Utah; and Hiking, Climbing and Exploring Western Utah's Jack Watson's Ibex Country.

He also helped his mother Venetta B. Kelsey, write & publish a book about the town she was born and raised in, Life on the Black Rock Desert--A History of Clear Lake, Utah.

Opens the door

Before Kelsey, all the guide books declared many canyons impassable. In this book, Kelsey has provided the information to hike canyons safely that were unvisited before his book. I've used this book since the First Edition in 1986. It's a classic and still tops. One warning. Kelsey is a stronger hiker than most of us. Add about 50% to his hiking time estimates if you're not under 35 and in good shape.

It's a Friggin' Adventure Bible, but Treat with Respect

This is the bible of Canyoneering in SE Utah. The simple maps, concise descriptions and knowledgeable tips will get you into as much trouble as you want . . . and that's why we do this, right? The park service has baned Kelsey's books from their bookstores because he "reveals too much," and they claim people "get into trouble" following his guides -- bugger to them! People can be unprepared idiots. If you read the damn book you'll realise that only trained people should be stemming up slot canyons, swimming hypothermic plunge pools and gingerly investigating delicate Anaszi ruins -- not your average hee-haws looking for a good place to swill a 12-Pack of beer. The beer swillers don't want this book, go to Lake Powell instead.

Good news, bad news

This book has the most thorough coverage of the canyon country available. It's allowed us to find several sites that we couldn't find in any other guidebook. That's the good news. The bad news is that what Kelsey considers non-technical often requires a harness and rope. He's obviously a climber, and on several occasions we've had to backtrack because we came to an impassable pour-off or cliff. So just be advised that hikers will often find the non-technical to be more technical than they'd expect from the descriptions.

About the Author
Cruising Guide Publications was created by Simon and Nancy Scott while living aboard their sailboat in the British Virgin Islands, and later, working in the bareboat charter industry for twenty years. There was a need for comprehensive guides to aid cruisers and charterers exploring the Caribbean island chain. These guides include not only navigational information, but also the rich history of the Caribbean islands, folklore, the flora and fauna, as well as where to go for diving, snorkeling and shore side entertainment and of course, what to do in an emergency. We have made it our mission to answer all the questions we had from charterers and cruisers and to add details and background about the islands to enhance the cruising experience.

Extremely useful when sailing in the Virgin Islands

We first saw this book in the nav station on a Moorings boat that we chartered in the British Virgin Islands. We looked it over and thought "These pictures are gorgeous. Why do they include it? Maybe they want to sell it to us." The Moorings doesn't sell it and, as of Summer 2004, they are not including new copies on boats because too many people took them home. It is a gorgeous picture book of anchorages in the Virgin Islands. It is not just a pretty picture book though.

Overleaf from every photograph is a copy of the picture with lines to show reefs and the passage into the harbor. In our two trips to the British Virgin Islands, these pictures have been extremely helpful more than once to get a picture of what we were doing. While text descriptions are helpful, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words when you are looking for a bouy, and you sure don't have time to read a thousand words.

This is a great supplement to the Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands and I wouldn't go to the BVI without it.

Postscript added August 2014.
I had to buy the new edition because we were going to sail in the BVI and our older version is in storage. As expected, I was glad to have overview pictures of even familiar anchorages. The new version includes some extra harbors but I wouldn't have bought the new edition if the old one had been available and I would have been right.

About the Author
Bernard Brandon Scott is the author of several books, including Hear Then the Parable, one of the most important books on parables in this generation, and the editor of several more. A charter member of the Jesus Seminar, he is co-chair of the Bible in Ancient and Modern Media Section of the Society of Biblical Literature and a consultant to the American Bible Society experimental film translations. In recognition of that work, the American Bible Society Research Center awarded him a research grant for 1999–2000 to work on sound mapping, the study of sound as the communication environment of the ancient world

Excellent Source

Re-Imagine the world is an excellent scholarly source on the parables and written in an easy to understand way. Scott keeps the chapters interesting, but not too long, and not confusing. It's a great book for people just beginning to read about the parables and for those who only want a brief overview. It shows many details that the common person would overlook, like Jewish law and ancient traditions.

It is important for anyone to keep in mind that no one scholar is 100% right, but all scholarly points of view are important.

It's an interesting, quick read. I definitely recommend it!

The "Subversive Storyteller"

Bernard Brandon Scott is a lay theologian and an internationally-known biblical scholar. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University as well as St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, IN, where he taught. He is currently the Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New Testament at the Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa. He is a senior fellow with the Jesus Seminar. His book is a creative attempt, and for me a successful one, to take two possible approaches to parables and ask whether they "cohere" or "fit together" to represent a "consistent picture" of Jesus.

Developing what he envisions as a model from surveying, he uses the work of the Jesus Seminar and chooses parables accordingly. He writes, "To lay out a map, a surveyor establishes points and then coordinates those points. I have developed three different coordinates. Each coordinate is specified by a parable that provides the initial insight that allows me to sketch the general contour of that coordinate. I will expand the insight by relating various other sayings and deeds to form a coherent field for each coordinate. With each coordinate we are, in a sense, plotting an aspect of Jesus' map. By triangulating the three points, the whole map of what Jesus is about should come into view." Maybe Jesus will look like a peasant Palestinian land surveyor! Let's see.

Scott proceeds to take the parable of the leaven, the parable of the empty jar and the parable of the good Samaritan (which he prefers to call "From Jerusalem to Jericho") as his three coordinates. He contends that the world "implied in these three coordinates re-imagines a community's social experience." The Empire of God is at the core of this re-imagining that Jesus does. The re-imagining includes a redefinition of family, of God in a non-patriarchal world and of social relations. His summary claims that the Empire of God is the presiding symbol and it functions to create through the imagination a sphere in which those who are part of this community of envisioning can experience healing, the hospitality of the unclean and the presence of God in God's non-empirical activity. As a social community wherein peasants accept each other, reject the perspective that they are in agonistic conflict with each other and reach out to enemies, a real threat to Rome's rule is posed. What is envisioned, Scott argues, is the Empire of God or a counter-world to the Empire of Rome.

This reviewer was captivated by the insights coming from Scott's book. He introduces Jesus as a "subversive poet," a new insight for me, and this makes him compelling. I have learned that this counter-world is a destination of grace and into the hands of the ultimate Mystery. Read this book and your faith journey just may be renewed! Mine was.

In Re-Imagine the World: An Introduction to the Parables of Jesus by Bernard Brandon Scott, the author gives a wide but good overview of a hand full of parables. Scott introduces the topic by talking about Jesus historically and the world in which Jesus lived culturally. Scott introduces the Jesus Seminar (where he was a charter member) and how the seminar voted on the parables themselves (black, red or pink letters.). He then goes through his thoughts on what a parable is and then further into the 2 source theory of how the synoptic gospels may have been written.

Scott then takes the reader through a handful of the more popular parables with a similar format of the parable itself, how it is handled in the separate gospels, any historical background or information that would be helpful, and then finally, his take on the interpretation of the parable. Scott does an excellent job of bringing the parable to a broad audience. He utilizes modern examples (from the Beatles to Brad Pitt movies) to drive his points home and to make the parable more understandable and readable to a modern audience. This book is a great tool for lay people who want to delve deeper into the parables and/or clergy who want an easy guide that provides great preachable ideas.
