Very disappointing!

This book is very disappointing. Although it goes into good depth, that depth is on a very, very limited number of stones/minerals. On top of that, there isn't a single color illustration in the whole book! This appears to be a book that was written decades ago, due to the B&W and the fact that it's missing many, many modern stones. It will be a fair resource for very common stones, but my quest for a color, modern, fairly complete reference regarding the spectra of stones continues. I strongly advise you to make sure that you buy this from Amazon or a seller with a good return policy...you will most likely be disappointed like I was.

A Classic Resource for the Working Gemologist

I read with some amusement the review of this book lambasting it for the lack of color spectra. Actually, B.W. Anderson was color blind, which is why he began using the instrument to begin with. Proper use of the hand spectroscope has nothing to do with color, but instead involves areas of absorption and transmission. These actually show up more clearly in black-and-white than in color.
Yes, this book is actually a reprint of a collection of articles that Anderson and Payne published from 1953–57. Those were published in The Gemmologist, a hard-to-find journal. Thus it is wonderful to have these collected into a single reference volume. This book is a must-have for the working gemologist.

Spectrometry analysis depends upon positions within the spectrum and color relationships when contrasted with a light source spectrum. To publish a book that neglects one half of the topic is unworthy of the authors. This book should be reprinted with all spectrums in full color as the original photos must have shown. It would move from ho-hum to excellent. Phil O.
