About the Author
Bruce Kaplan is a newspaper editor and editorial trainer with more than 40 years' international experience. He has held senior positions with major publications in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. An Australian edition of his book Editing Made Easy has become a standard reference and learning guide in Australia and elsewhere: his new book expands on that work and, for the first time, adapts it to the spellings and conventions of U.S. English.

Editing Made Easy

There are some books that every writer should have on his/her bookshelf. This is not one of them. This book should be On The Writer's Desk so it is always handy to help with the editing process. I am a writer: I have read many books on editing. I have gotten confused by many books on editing, but with this book for the first time I understand when I should use "which" and when I should use "that." In the list of clichés, I found many that I commonly use that I had not realized were clichés. On page 15 is a list of 12 Golden Rules for professional writing and editing. The rest of the book expands on those rules. While the book does not mention the use of search and find in the editing process, I am, for example, going to search for the word "that" in all of my documents so I can examine each use of the word and determine whether it is needed, or whether I need to rephrase the sentence. I highly recommend this book.

A handy reference

Editing Made Easy is a slim book, very much in the manner of Elements of Style by Strunk and White. Bruce Kaplan's book, however is written for the modern American audience. While no style guide is universal, as Kaplan points out, the information in this book addresses the most common usage. Kaplan notes where style guides differ by industry and cautions the writer to read the target publication before submitting material for consideration and to write in the style of that publication.
Everyone involved in writing for publication needs to have this book by their side, ready for instant reference.

Easy-to-use reference

As an author of both fiction and non-fiction, I was impressed with the amount of useful information Kaplan has packed into this easy-to-use reference. My copy has a dozen dog-eared pages already, and loads of yellow high-liter to boot. Not only does Kaplan concisely explain the rules of writing, but he also is quick to identify when a "rule" is really a style. In addition, he provides hundreds of examples, a benefit I find especially useful. So, now I know what a split infinitive is and why it works so well for Captain James T. Kirk--and when it won't work. Grammatical challenges, punctuation, words that are frequently used incorrectly--Kaplan covers the bases. This is a great reference for anyone who wants to improve their writing. I plan to make it required reading for my thirteen-year-old son!
