Nonfiction. "Written against the background of war at the turn of this century, this millennium—the Gulf War, the Lebanese civil war and the military occupations of that country, the author's country of origin—these letters, OF CITIES AND WOMEN, are in their turn now letters to cities and women—that we, that is, women and men alike, might eventually, before it is too late, 'find the right geography for our revelations.'"—Barbara Harlow

From Publishers Weekly
While this volume might at first be considered a welcome addition to the almost forgotten canon of published letters, it quickly disappoints. Adnan's letters begin in June 1990, purportedly focused on feminism and written for a Paris-based magazine planning a special issue on Arab women. Eventually, however, her letters become more of a travel journal as she visits London, France, southern Spain, Berlin, Frankfurt, the Greek islands, Beirut and Rome, commenting on women and other matters over a two-year period. Her observations about feminism are provincial at best: speaking of Penelope as the feminine archetype, she says that woman "is that which waits" and is a complement to the feminine principle in man. Strangely, Adnan provides more insight into the Gulf War than into women's issues. What little we know of Adnan ( Sitt Marie-Rose ) herself must be gleaned from the often circuitous, stream-of-consciousness letters: her childhood was spent in Beirut, she's a painter, she speaks of Paris as home, her mother was Greek. She often writes as "we," but readers have no idea who her companion is. An introductory note to the book would have helped immensely.

Review
...A provocative combination of meditation, mediation, and immediacy that has so distinguished her internationally acclaimed writing.--Barbara Harlow, University of Texas, Austin OF CITIES AND WOMEN is more concerned with the nature of race itself, its definition and redefinition, through philosophical speculation, observations on the relations between artists and their ostensible subjects, between women and cities, and between women and men. ...An exquisite sensibility (a cross between the mysticism of such great medeivals as Rabia and Hidegaard of Bingen and the American lucidity of Emily Dickinson or Lorinne Niedecker) generally infuses Adnan's evocative prose. -- The Nation, Ammiel Alcalay OF CITIES AND WOMEN...reads like an extended meditation on the experience of exile. From Barcelona to Skopelos, these letters trace the author's travels and reflections as each city becomes a kind of hand mirror to the psyche, a locus of new understanding... ...Adnan reads the figures of landscape, nation, art, and street, as easily as words on a page. In Cities, she continually draws startling, yet graceful connections between these elements, showing her readers how to find the essence of a country in a Cezanne mountain, how to understand exile by contemplating the composition of a buffet. Adnan's use of language reflects this poetic process of 'decoding.' She arrives at deeply original insights on the nature of feminism, politics, and loss through concise description and observation. Adnan's writing is lovely... --Middle East Journal, Diana Abu-Jabr, author of Arabian Jazz.

Spanning media and genres, Adnan's writings have led to numerous collaborations with artists and musicians, including the French part of CIVIL WarS, a multi-language opera by American stage director Robert Wilson, performed in Lyon and Bobigny in 1985.
