About the Author
Kathryn Schmidt is a licensed architect. She has designed and managed remodeling projects since 1970 including five different remodelings for her own home. She received BA, Master of Architecture and MBA degrees from Stanford University and lives in Palo Alto, California.

From the Introduction: Each year thousands of households begin remodeling and home improvement projects in pursuit of more comfortable homes. But often, remodeling is uncomfortable because many homeowners do not know what the process and their projects will include when they start out. Remodeling is complicated and it can feel out of control if one does not understand what is involved.
The goal of this book is to help homeowners understand and maintain control of their home remodeling projects. It explains the steps required to take a remodeling from an idea to a finished product. This book is a homeowner's detailed project management guide, planning aid and system for collecting information; it does not explain how to design or how to build. It is based on techniques that professional project managers and architects use to manage the planning, design and building process. The book will be a resource throughout any remodeling project. It outlines the details that you need to know and will help you remember to do what is necessary to obtain a good product in an organized manner. Hopefully it will bring not only organization, but also an element of comfort, to a complex process.
Each remodeling is unique, but each project requires the same careful organization and management. Whether you have a small project, whether you hire several professionals or only a single contractor, whether you do some construction yourself or not, you will go through the same process. Remodeling is a challenging endeavor. It is never completely easy and carefree and the often heard statement "remodeling takes twice as much time and costs twice as much money as you first imagined" has some basis. But the rewards are very great. You solve a problem; you make your home more livable and comfortable; you help create your own living environment; you make a good investment. Then you have the pleasure of enjoying and living in the product of your own successful efforts.
