Mike Kelsey - the worlds hardest working Hiker and Writer - we all owe him an immeasurable debt!

Mike Kelsey has changed my life! No I am not a nut job, I hold a doctorate from UCSF and USC. In my spare time, like vacations and now that I am retired, Kelsey, has giving me a whole world of exploration, beauty and serenity by hiking his guts out so that I have the knowledge beforehand to pick what I want. Not only does he hike and put it in print for us in a clear way, but he gives us context for our exploration. He does the background that we could never do. Explaining the history and geology of each region and special warnings. He also explains the background of what the government is up to in each wilderness area. Sometimes that good and sometimes its not. Now that Ed Abbey is physically gone, I consider that a good thing. Michael is a peaceful spirit - he does not like the role of troublemaker anymore than anyone else who enjoys solitude and serenity. Mike expects us to be and behave like adults. I very much appreciate that he helps us with Rock Art so that many of us see this beautiful art that never would get to see it. Some people get upset about this, but Mike only scratches the surface of existing rock art [surprise!]. I have only talked to Michael once, but he is a most remarkable contributor to our wilderness, and in that vein, there is no one I respect more.
I would recommend his books as a gift for anyone even marginal interested in hiking - it will keep them nights reading about our amazing wilderness. I don't think anyone has attained the level Mike has in his books - not even close. In the rare event Michael, doesn't cover a hike, I have to resort to inferior explanations of a hike I want to do. As many have noted, the only criticism I have of Mike's books, is his hiking time. Mike is a world class hiker, double his times for most hikes and you have an idea, at least add 50% to his time for a hike. He is honest enough to tell you this in his books. In this world, he has no equal, their may be better hikers, but none of them can put a book together like Kelsey.

Kelsey has a lot of good info, but any hiker should make sure that they have a good GPS unit or USGS quad map. The hand-drawn maps in the book are not always accurate or to scale, and it is hard to lineup his drawings with real maps. Otherwise, very informative and well researched.
