Touring Northern Waters...

Alaska famously has limited transportation infrastructure compared to the lower '48 states. The good news, for visitors,is that many parts of the state can be reached using the Alaska Marine Highway System, which operates a small fleet of passenger and automobile ferries along the Pacific Ocean coast of the state. "Alaska's Ocean Highways", by author Sherry Simpson, with beautiful color photography by Mark Kelley, is both an introduction and a souvenir of a system sometimes referred to as the poor man's cruise line.
The Alaska Marine Highway System begins at Bellingham, Washington, and services towns and cities in the Alaska panhandle such as Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, and Haines. Depending on the season, some ferries cross the Gulf of Alaska to reach ports in southcentral Alaska such as Cordova, Valdez, Whittier, Seward, Homer, and Kodiak. Ferry routes extend to the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands. The system offers a great way to travel to Alaska without the long grind of the Alaskan Highway through Canada, and with a front row seat for some of the world's most remarkable scenery and marine wildlife. Humble ferry passengers get some of the same views, at a discount, as the many cruise ship passengers who ply Alaska's waters in summer.
