Great handy resource

I really like this product because in just a handy map sized phamplet you have access to a lot of word translations with the phonetics in paraenthesis. We will be going to China soon and this will come in handy.

Amazing Travel Tool!

I was so excited when I first found this clever product. I was looking for something that was helpful, portable, and durable, and this Chinese language map fit the bill. It folds out like a road map and displays essential Chinese information in an easy-to-find, easy-to-use format. No flipping through tiny, phrase book pages in frustration! No torn pages or cracked book spines! :)
Features of This Product:
The topic panels are numbered in English and Chinese, which is a cool teaching element at a glance. The Contents include the following sections: Meeting People; Asking Questions; Transportation; Telephone/Internet; Sightseeing; Dining Out; Shopping; Numbers; Emergencies; Time; Calendar; Hotel & Room Service words; Money; Mail, and Essential Signs / Characters such as "exit," "temple," "open," and "closed." Each individual section contains survival words written in English and in Chinese Pinyin with a pronunciation guide. A scan code on the front can be read by your smart phone. It will take you to the "Learn A Language at Bilingual Books" website where you can learn more about products and other opportunities. The companion piece "CHINESE in 10 minutes a day® with CD-ROM" is available on Amazon (at the writing of this review).
What I Would Have Liked It To Include: I wish the map was just a little longer with another panel or two highlighting some cultural tidbits and etiquette.
Don't expect a whole lot in terms of learning how to write or to recognize Chinese characters here as this product seems geared more toward spoken Chinese and Pinyin. You will encounter a few Chinese characters on the map, but not enough for any degree of genuine literacy. If you truly want to learn and to speak the Chinese language, you will have to go further than this little language aid. However, it is an awesome little tool for its intended purpose... travel. I find it to be more friendly and concise than traditional phrasebooks.
This also makes an interesting class prop if your students are studying Chinese people and culture.

Chinese - a Language Map - and surely...

...this is an other essential tool to dive into the Mandarin language. Which, by the way, is a tonal one, so rising and lowering syllables is essential like in most of the Southeast-Asian languages...
Even if You will dive not too deep, the Chinese appreciate always the efforts a visitor makes to enter in this oh so important part of their culture!
Word by word, separated for the right context, there they are:
Meeting People
Asking Questions
Numbers
Telephone and Internet
Mail
Calender
Time
Shopping
Dining out
Money
Life's little Emergencies
Sightseeing
Transportation
Hotels and Room Service
and ... last but never least: The Most Essential Signs like MEN or WOMAN, EXIT, OPEN or CLOSED, INFORMATION, DO NOT ENTER etc.
A very nice touch are the illustrations, based on real Chines e attractions and the first 100 numbers with their signs (which are almost the same as in Japanese ...)
The format is right to hide it in a menu - when You eat out with Chinese folks...:)
Take this map with You on Your first voyage to China, read it on Your flight there and You will see, this little bit of knowledge of the language will make a lot of a difference to the people You meet!
Believe me, I have found it out by myself...
And then - if You buy some more and taken them there - it is an always very appreciated gift for special occasions - and not only by children...:)
I love these language maps and have them for Chinese, Japanese, French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, Vietnamese, Arabic - and there are editions for several Indian languages, Swahili, Hebrew, Polish, Norwegian, Italian, and German, too.
For almost every trip there is a language map. Try them out - You won't regret it!
