A must buy for all who want to know the history of the IDF, inside this book you can find a lot of pictures of the Israeli aircraft like the F-16; F-4 Phantom jet,the skyhawk and not the least the C-130 Hercules of the Israeli Air force, here you can read the detail of the training of an Israeli soldier from the first day in the army up to the day he finish his course and find himself serving his country either in the navy,army of air force. For those who are fond of the IDF,go buy yourself this book and I guarantee you would like this book very much.

The Emergence of a New Cultural Tradition

In EMPTINESS AND BRIGHTNESS Don Cupitt describes how great thinkers such as Plato and Buddha influenced the formation of at least three major cultural traditions which survived for more than 2,000 years. This period is known as the First Axial Age.

A Second Axial Age began with the work of Erasmus and Copernicus. This period was marked by an explosion of knowledge which has changed forever how we view ourselves and our place in the universe.

Now the Second Axial Age is coming to an end in Cupitt's view. The great religions are tottering and a new cultural tradition is emerging. At the present time we have a modern world view which is dominated by communication and a constantly changing consensus. There is no more eternal reality for us. Instead we are learning to embrace a world of ceaseless change and exchange. Events are no longer viewed as being controlled from the outside.

Cupitt confesses that he does not know the answer to the Big Question. He urges us to give up the idea that someone else has the answer. Cupitt suggests that we develop the ability to do our own religious thinking while we remain always aware of the shifting consensus.

The author has only a few main points to make in this book. His strength lies in his ability to present his arguments repeatedly with fresh examples. Above all he is never dogmatic. EMPTINESS AND BRIGHTNESS is a serious book which deserves to be read by anyone with an open mind. Cupitt's unique views take some effort to absorb and for that reason his repetitive style is very useful to the reader.

A Most Enlightening Read!

Professor Cupitt has penned a most insightful work with Emptiness & Brightness! I am convinced his call to abandon Platonic metaphysics and develop a non-realist spiritual understanding is our world's best option. His discussion of how we - through language - create our world, and how this world is all we have, has opened my mind to many new things.
I am still processing a good bit of Cupitt's presentation, but highly recommend this book to anyone on a spiritual quest.

A Manifesto for the Second Axial Age

This is the first book I have read by Don Cupitt, but it certainly will not be the last. That said, because it is the first, I find myself reaching for analogies.

Other reviewers have already mentioned the book's affinity to postmodern theories of language (though the writing style, thankfully, is not postmodernist) and neatly outlined Cupitt's theory of the Second Axial Age; so I will limit myself to noting the book's affinity to existentialism. To that end, imagine, if you will, a short existentialist treatise that really is affirmative, even upbeat.

I know the major existentialists defend themselves against charges of pessimism and, at an intellectual level, I get it. But just a cursory survey of their titles suggests otherwise: dread, nothingness, estrangement--these are their concerns, and they aren't cheery topics.

Interestingly, while Cupitt draws copiously from existentialists such as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Heidegger, he also draws from Buddhism, and perhaps because of this he is more focused on Brightness than on Emptiness. The result is that (again, by way of analogy), whereas Sartre leaves you with *nothing* more than the suggestion that you keep a stiff upper lip in the face of your existential condition, Cupitt is thoroughly, emotively convincing when he argues that we really should revel in it.

For those of you who, like me, have always been inspired by, but never fully understood Meursault's epiphanic sense of oneness with the universe at the end of Camus's THE STRANGER, this book will be helpful.

As for the prose itself, Cupitt at times reads like a synthesis of Ray Bradbury (at his most poetic and impressionistic), Heidegger (in his more pellucid writings) and Nietzsche. Cupitt hasn't yet boiled his thoughts down to aphorisms (at least not in this book), but he is almost there: the average length of his chapters is 6-8 pages--and in them he packs a lot.

If you are interested at all in Be-ing, Language and what Cupitt calls Brightness (I might call it Enlightenment), then I cannot recommend this short, passionate, jargon-free book enough to you.

A famous first for Chicanas, a bold continuation of the subject after "Companeras: Latina Lesbians." Poetry, Art, letters, an interview with Ana Castillo, crtical theory and validation. Alcala's ending piece is an excellent summary. "I think of other Chicana lesbians as family..." Still the best comprehensive text on the subject 7 years after its publishing. An absolute must read for anyone interested in the subject "because many of us have a cousin, a sister etc.."-Trujillo

Since its publication almost four decades ago, this work by renowned gem and mineral expert John Sinkankas has been a standard reference on the subject of the gem materials found throughout North America. The present volume, the third in the series, follows previous volumes published in 1959 and 1976. It presents the latest and most comprehensive information on North America's gemstones, based on Sinkankas' extensive correspondence with gem and mineral dealers, individuals actively engaged in mining operations, and his knowledge of the gemological literature.

Gemstone entries, both minerals and rocks, are listed alphabetically. Within each entry, the occurrences of each gemstone are mostly arranged in a geographical order from the northeast to the south and southwest parts of North America. They are all grouped into convenient political divisions, such as the provinces of Canada and the states of Mexico....

Detailed compilation of discoveris of NA gemstones

This is an update featuring all new information which has come to light since vol. II was published in 1976. It is a detailed compilation of discoveries and occurrences of all North American gemstones.
The book is organized simply with a brief description of each stone followed by details from each geographical region in which it has been found. Detailed bibliographical references follow each entry, facilitating further study.
There is a dazzling section of 16 color plates highlighting the most spectacular recent discoveries. An array of heat-treated sapphire colors, precious opal, exquisite turquoise & a beautiful elephant tourmaline carving are featured.
Of special interest are recent diamond discoveries and an extensive section on the varieties and cultivation of pearls. This is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in the wide variety of gemstones in North America.
