Don't waste your money.
By Dylan
First let me say I am a professional Geologist and a professional rockhound.
I was a rockhound before I became a geologist, so I appreciate non academic knowledge about prospecting.
To be fair the first part of the book about the history of gemstones in the USA maybe good. I don't pretend to be an expert on this.
The book consists mostly of lists of museums, what states have which minerals, what your birthstone is etc. Stuff you could find in two seconds on the web. The pictures are laughable, no pictures of rocks or minerals or their environs, just pictures of shovels picks buckets and hammers (in case you don't know what they look like). The actual collecting information is terrible.
For example Colorado is perhaps the state with the most diverse mineral species, everything from rhodocrosite to phenacite to the more common and famous, amazonite and smokey quartz, not to mention aquamarine. Yet the only collecting localities in Colorado mentioned, are a few gold localities.
Another example, many of the minerals listed are not even minerals. One example that the authors really should know considering they are seem to know about the history of ornamental minerals in the US is; jadeite and jade are listed as two separate minerals while nephrite is not even mentioned. Nephrite and jadeite are the two minerals referred to as "jade".
In short if you know nothing about about geology or mineral prospecting you will learn nothing from this book and if you know anything you know more than the authors.
