Threshold Experiences: The Archetype of Beginnings, by Michael Conforti

"In the beginning", so goes many a great story. These familiar words beckon us across a threshold, often transporting us into unknown worlds and novel experiences. So too our lives are filled with many such "beginnings" - new jobs, relationships, adventures, and even the inception of life itself. Each of these "threshold experiences" not only introduces us to new domains, but also draws us into the realities of archetypal fields. Learning to creatively interact with these prefigured, a priori fields can allow us rich access to sources of eternal wisdom. Jungian analyst Michael Conforti's examination of the initial clinical interview as a "threshold experience" shows that the same archetypal processes responsible for the generation of life iself also shape patient- therapist relationships, creating fascinating, highly patterned dynamics. These powerful fields structure events so that core issues in clients', and often even therapists', lives are re-enacted in the therapeutic setting, with remarkable fidelity to the archetypal field within which each is embedded. Conforti's deft weaving together of psychological and scientific theory, dream analysis, and clinical vignettes elucidates the ways that the psyche entrains both client and therapist into a synchronized pattern. An understanding of the role of the Self in this process reveals the profound meaning and purpose that can be gleaned from careful attention to the communications occurring during the early phase of the therapeutic dialogue. Drawing from the fields of Jungian psychology, biology, quantum physics, and the new sciences, the author provides a unique lens for viewing the central archetypal dynamics operating within an individual life. His findings demonstrate how past experiences not only shape the initial stages of therapy, but also allow us to understand the future trajectory of treatment. This important study confirms C.G. Jung's assertion of the need for an interdisciplinary perspective if we are to truly comprehend the workings of the psyche.

Archetypes, Patterns, Psychology
By Jamie Star
This humble, totally readable book explores and explains our patterns that repeat over time, and how threshold moments and origins start us on a path of thinking, behavior and coherent symbolism replicates until something bigger comes along. Using Jungian Psychology, systems theory, chaos theory and Conforti's own piercing perceptive, this is a foundational text for the study of Archetypal Pattern Analysis. This book changed my outlook on people and events: a view that is based in patterns of the psyche and energy systems. If any of these subjects interest you, you've got to check out this book!

Threshold experiences: The Archetype of beginnings: The book Over-promises, under-delivers

Threshold experiences: The Archetype of beginnings: Overpromises, under-delivers

It was with great anticipation and curiosity that I delved into the book by Dr Conforti. Notably, the section on p.14 made my heart beat a little faster: “Once again, my course of inquiry led back to ideas about the existence and dynamics of pre-formed fields (morphogenetic stabilities), which worked to entrain each member of the system into its orientation. I wondered if there could really be something as powerful as a field to structure form (and in the case of therapeutic interactions), guide the unfolding interaction between two people”. Sad to say, my excitement soon turned into disappointment. Here I’m notably referring to Chapter 3 (The relationship between mother/infant interactions and the establishment of the analytic relationship), which is essentially about object relationships. The section on p.51 where the author attempts to explain the mother/child dynamics and ‘maternal hold’ via the archetypal perspective and ‘uroborus’, seems contrived and superfluous. This is notably the case because Winnicott’s thesis is in and of itself entirely explanatory and the author’s attempts to finesse this into a metaphysical or transpersonal frame (and collective unconscious), doesn’t convince or enlighten. He attempts to conflate two fundamentally different paradigms. Chapter 4 which deals with Jung’s’ association test suffers similar shortcomings. The clinical vignette about the patient who dreamt about “I am driving down the highway and see trees being pulled out by the roots” (p.10) – and which was later linked to “her fifth abortion” (p.11) - reminds one of “salami slicing and cherry picking”, as this is overused (see, e.g. also p.61). Chapter 2 is reasonably enlightening and closer to the knitting as per the books’ title. The Appendix (“Chaotic attractors in the therapeutic system”), whilst very interesting, would fit better into a context of a book on cybernetics, chaos theory and self-organising systems. Again, the author conflates two different paradigms – self-organising systems and morphogenetic fields. To state that, “…the attempted process or reorganization occurred beyond the conscious recognition of the members within the system” (p.141) does not automatically mean that this is the consequence of “innate laws and regularities” (author citing Bohm, 1980). System dynamics can be unconscious, but this doesn’t mean that they reach into or are driven by the collective unconscious or need to be metaphysical. They can be adequately and more parsimoniously explained by way of dampening and amplifying feedback loops; bi-furcation points, etc. It seems as if the author is trying to explain one paradigm by using ‘evidence’ from another. He falls into the same trap that Jung did, namely to mix-up that which is unknowable (Kant’s ‘transcendence’/ noumena) with that which is a-priory (Kant’s “transcendental”) and what is “immanent” (Kant).
Based on the cover of the book, which reflects a door, I was hoping that the author would have addressed a wide variety of ‘thresholds’, both concretely and metaphorically, from a Jungian perspective. For example, a groom carrying a bride over a threshold, a patient crossing the threshold into a therapist’s office; the threshold between one life phase to another, etc. What bearing does the putative “Self” as a putative morphogenetic field have on these events?

As a whole, I fear the book and it’s title, over-promises and under-delivers.
