About the Author
Etel Adnan was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1925, the daughter of a Greek Christian from Smyrna and a high- ranking Ottoman officer from Damascus. Her work as a whole is a faithful record of the times and places she has lived in Beirut, Paris, and in the San Francisco Bay Area. At least eighteen works by Adnan have been published in English. They include SITT MARIE ROSE (Post-Apollo Press, 1982); THE ARAB APOCALYPSE (Post-Apollo Press, 1989); SEA AND FOG (Nightboat Books, 2012), winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Poetry and the California Book Award for Poetry; and PREMONITION (Kelsey Street Press, 2014). Nightboat Books published the 2-volume set, TO LOOK AT THE SEA IS TO BECOME WHAT ONE IS: AN ETEL ADNAN READER, in 2014. In 2011, Adnan received Small Press Traffic's Lifetime Achievement Award. Her paintings, described by New York Times art critic Roberta Smith as "stubbornly radiant abstractions," have been widely exhibited, most recently at Documenta 13 and in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Spanning media and genres, Adnan's writings have led to numerous collaborations with artists and musicians, including the French part of CIVIL WarS, a multi-language opera by American stage director Robert Wilson, performed in Lyon and Bobigny in 1985.

Elsewhere Etel Adnan has written already two decades ago: T.E. Lawrence was the total embodiment, and consumption by fire, of the English Colonialist actions in the Middle East of his time.

By this all of the subsequent actions ("beacon-on-the hill etc.) taken by US representatives Reagan and 2 Bush's could be seen to have ignored the region's truths, so many of the objectives of the Iraq War not having been accomplished.

Etel Adnan has spoken on Beirut. She makes Derrida's flight from Algeria to Paris look like an abandonment.
Etel Adnan has spoken on Palestine and the Palestinian.

Etel Adnan speaks in English in this book, despite its having been published in French originally. Etel's French version is not the searching language of the "French poets." Rather, her English shows more insight for this text, and the Post-Apollo edition is a magnificent demonstration of poetry and publishing for a pittance ($20). Who sells their copy of City Lights "Howl" by Ginsberg? no one. Adnan's "The Arab Apocalypse" is the same.

Jack Hirschman has said Etel Adnan's ( orig.: L'apocalypse arabe. Paris: Papyrus Editions, 1980) is "a nullified hope refusing its zero." She speaks for all Arabs and all others, she is a voice of navigation in the world without choosing sides. She attempts to give literature the ability to speak truth where there seemingly is none.

After "Apocalypse" Etel Adnan wrote (now prophetic) already two decades ago (paraphrased): "[I write]…with the belief that all the things we [have written] are of serious importance, although knowing well with all the current change all things we do or say will be totally obsolete before the century's end..but let us not sink into depression.. we have to distill our anguish and spill it with much care on all kinds of surfaces until the hour of total incapacity."

This is an epic length prose poetry. We read it aloud as a class in a summer workshop. I suggest you study the author's background before diving in. Alot of what is said is generically applicable to all fallout of wars, while some is particular. On the whole, I think reading it in a group with an ongoing discussion made it a lot more accessible than it would have been otherwise.

A classic and still the best

There isn't one single aspect of field collecting and processing minerals that Mr. Sinkankas has neglected in this classic manual. It has inspired generations of enthusiasts, myself included. My favorite feature remains the clear illustrations, including cross-sections of his favorite vug pockets, proper placement of gads, prospecting with ultraviolet light, and the copious photographs of geomorphological indicators. For the absolute beginner and experienced hand alike, this is heady stuff. It's practically a mini-geology course in a book. Mr. Sinkankas' style couldn't be easier to read. If you ever run across his classic Mineralogy, snag it. It'll have you hooked for life.

How to Field Collect Minerals

This is the third edition; the first in 1961 was titled Gemstones and Minerals: How and Where to Find Them, the second in 1970 was titled Prospecting for Gemstones and Minerals, and this third edition is perhaps the most appropriately titled; all editions are very similar with minor changes, and all are excellent.
This clearly written how-to book is written for the layman, with very descriptive text accompanied by diagrams and pictures. Not a guide to localities, nor a descriptive mineralogy (see the author's excellent mineralogy text for that); this tells HOW to collect minerals. Chapters cover field trips, tools and how to use them, rock classes and how to recognize them, how mineral deposits form, field features of mineral deposits (pegmatites, sulfide veins, basalt and diabase sills, alpine vugs, etc.), collecting practices, preparation of specimens (cleaning, trimming, and preservation), storage and exhibit (labelling, cataloging, assembling and arrangement), with useful appendices, bibliography, and index.
I bought an edition years ago and soon found it very useful, particularly the section on Tools and How to Use Them. For field collecting, this book shows you how. -DMM

Best field manual

This book seems to have everything, with sections on materials, tools, methods, locations... the works.

Like any book that has "Everything", assuming it doesn't resemble an unabridged encyclopedia,
It won't have every little thing.

But it will serve as a good field manual... and considering its cost and rarity, should you really bring it into the field... spring for a zippered book cover with some level of protection...
or leave it on the table...at home...by your favorite chair. Where you will likely make notes of what you need in the field.

Don't forget to join one of those Rock & Mineral Clubs mentioned to really get a head start.
(Besides, such clubs usually have contacts at quarries and other sites, not to mention umbrella insurance for the mine owners... which will probably get you in more places than you could on your own.)

So, if you must start somewhere, start with this book. You won't be disappointed.
(It's a GOOD beginning)
